W&L Women's Swimming Opens 2016-17 Campaign

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Washington and Lee women's swimming team opened up its 2016-17 campaign with 686 points and a first-place finish out of six teams at the Derby City Invitational on Saturday at the Ralph Wright Natatorium on the campus of the University of Louisville.

Centre finished in second with 533 points, while Bellarmine took third with 460 points. Birmingham Southern finished in fourth with 384.5, while Ashbury took fifth with 246.5 points. McKendree finished with 129 to take the sixth spot.

First-year Emily Hageboeck (Charleston, W. Va. / George Washington) led the way for the Generals with three individual victories and one relay win. She placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.03, the 200-yard breast (2:25.46) and claimed the 200 IM (2:12.87).

Senior Emily Rollo (Haddonfield, N.J. / Haddonfield Memorial) took first in the 100-yard back (59.79) and the 200-yard back (2:09.93). She also had a fourth-place finish in the 200 IM (2:16.03). Rollo and Hageboeck were members of the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:49.62) that also featured sophomore Elle Chancey (Tampa, Fla. / Berkeley Preparatory School) and first-year Ali MacQueen (Memphis, Tenn. / St. Mary's Episcopal School).

W&L took first (3:40.44) in the 400 freestyle relay with the team of Chancey, first-year Ashley Johnston (Gainesville, Ga. / North Hall), sophomore Jordan Watson (Fayetteville, Ga. / Whitewater) and senior Elisabeth Holmes (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham B. Broughton).

Chancey also had a first-place finish in the 100 free with a time of 53.81, while MacQueen took first in the 100 fly (57.21) and third in the 100 free (54.42). First-year Kelly Amar (Mount Vernon, N.Y. / The Ursuline School) finished first in the 200 fly with a time of 2:13.13 and third in the 200 IM (2:15.66). Holmes touched the wall in 5:12.80 in the 500 free to take first, while first-year Katherine Degner (Virginia Beach, Va. / Frank W. Cox) took first in the 1000 free (10:58.33).

The Generals had multiple second-place finishes, including Watson in the 500 free (5:18.66), junior Mara Tynan (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) in the 200 fly (2:15.32) and Holmes in the 200 free (1:56.74).

First-year Taylor Ecleberry (Goshen, Ky. / Sacred Heart Academy) finished third in the 200 breast with a time of 2:34.35 and first-year Caroline Florence (Dallas, Texas / Ursuline Academy) placed third in the 1000-yard free (11:13.24).

W&L returns to action next Saturday when it hosts the ODAC Relays at Cy Twombly Pool at 12:00 pm.
