BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Competing at Nininger Pool, the Washington and Lee women's swimming team defeated Bridgewater on Saturday, 122-78. The Generals had five individual event winners and took the top spot in one relay.
W&L opened the meet by claiming first in the 200 meter medley relay. The quartet of sophomore Stephanie Foster (Columbia, Md./Long Reach), sophomore Sarah Schaffer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South), junior Caroline Hamp (Avon Lake, Ohio/Elyria Catholic) and first-year Natalie Brendsel (Oakton, Va./Flint Hill) finished the race in 2:08.53. Brendsel also placed first in the 50 meter freestyle with a time of 29.07.
In the 800 meter freestyle, the Generals took the top-three spots. Junior Sydney Gay (Henrico, Va./Henrico) placed first (10:07.27), sophomore Liz Platt (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Area) was second (10:17.94) and sophomore Lindsey Gilbert (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) was third (10:34.55).
The Blue and White also swept the top-three spots in the 200 meter IM. First-year Haylee Rademann (Folsom, Calif./St. Francis) touched the wall in 2:39.01, Foster came in second at 2:39.34 and first-year Jillian Leigh (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) was third in 2:49.36.
The success continued in the 100 meter backstroke as W&L took first, second and third. Sophomore Emma Swabb (Erie, Pa./McDowell) finished in 1:10.17, Hamp was second (1:12.15) and junior Hannah Melkun (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) placed third with a time of 1:17.03.
In the 400 meter freestyle, first-year Elisabeth Holmes (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) claimed the top spot in 4:40.31, first-year Monica Flocken (Solon, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) was second with a time of 4:54.82 and Rademann finished third (4:56.80).
The Generals will be back in action on Saturday, January 18, when they travel to Catholic to take on the Cardinals and Marymount on 1:00 pm.
