FOREST, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2013-14 preseason women's swimming poll on Friday afternoon and Washington and Lee was picked to finish atop the standings.
W&L received 64 votes, including eight of the nine first-place votes. Emory & Henry picked up the remaining top nod towards 54 tallies to move the Wasps into the second position, just one point clear of Randolph-Macon (53) in third. Bridgewater (42), Sweet Briar (33), Greensboro (28), Notre Dame of Maryland (23), Hollins (19) and Guilford (8) rounded out the poll.
The Generals return seven of their 2013 First-Team All-ODAC honorees, including the Swimmer of the Year, junior Caroline Hamp (Avon Lake, Ohio/Elyria Catholic), and the ODAC Rookie of the Year, sophomore Emma Swabb (Erie, Pa./McDowell). Hamp and Swabb were joined on the first team by seniors Meredith Hardy (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) and Lauren Kasoff (Owings Mills, Md./Saint Paul's), junior Hannah Melkun (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford), and sophomores Stephanie Foster (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) and Meredith Murphy (Hillsboro, Calif./Saint Ignatius College Prep).
Hamp garnered Swimmer of the Year accolades after participating in a pair of ODAC championship winning relay teams and claimed one individual event title, while also setting conference or meet records in two events. Hamp and her teammates won the 400-yard medley relay (3:59.99) and set the ODAC and meet record in the 200-yard medley relay (1:48.11). She set and reset the 100-yard butterfly record, posting a time of 58.70 in the preliminaries and then bettering that with a winning time of 58.52 in the finals. Hamp, the 2012 ODAC Rookie of the Year, also placed second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:12.56) and third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.51).
Swabb won both the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.93) and 400-yard individual medley (4:40.25) at the ODAC Championships. She and her teammates set a new ODAC and meet record in the 200-yard free relay (1:37.15) and joined Hamp and others on the winning 400-yard medley relay team. Swabb also placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.43).
W&L also welcomes back three second team all-conference honorees in junior Mary Gabe (Mequon, Wis./Homestead), and sophomores Liz Platt (DuBois, Pa./Dubois Area) and Sarah Schaffer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South).
Gabe collected second-team laurels after posting a third-place performance in the 200 breast (2:32.56) at the ODAC meet. Platt placed third in the 200 back in a time of 2:14.67, and Schaffer took home third in the 50 free (24.75), 100 free (53.88) and the 200 free (57.45).
The Generals take to the pool for the first time this season on October 12th, when they host Centre at 11:00 am.
