W&L Women's Swimming Claims ODAC Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Washington and Lee women's swimming team recorded 1000 points over three days of competition to claim the 2013 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship on Sunday at the Greensboro Aquatics Center.

The title is the program's sixth consecutive and 23rd overall.

Select individuals also received recognition from the conference, including sophomore Caroline Hamp (Avon Lake, Ohio/Elyria Catholic) being named the ODAC Swimmer of the Year. Senior Delaney Rolfe (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) was chosen as the ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the third year in a row and first-year Emma Swabb (Erie, Pa./McDowell) garnered ODAC Rookie of the Year honors.

Randolph-Macon finished the three-day competition with 515 points to finish in second and Bridgewater scored 412 points for third. Emory & Henry (408), Greensboro (244), Notre Dame of Maryland (228), Sweet Briar (222), Hollins (151) and Guilford (76) wrapped up the team results.

Senior Brittany Ross (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), sophomore Hannah Melkun (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) and first-year Stephanie Foster (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) each claimed an individual win on the day. Brittany Ross set a new meet and school record in the 200 fly with her 2:10.71 performance for first place. Melkun clocked in at 2:27.33 in the 200 breast to take the top spot and Foster recorded a first-place showing in the 200 back with a time of 2:11.33.

The 400 free relay featuring seniors Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) and Rolfe, junior Meredith Hardy (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) and first-year Sarah Schaffer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) came in at 3:35.64 to claim a win.

In the 200 back, four more Generals placed in the top eight. Hamp was runner-up in the event, timing in at 2:12.56. First-year Liz Platt (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Area) finished third in 2:14.67, first-year Grace Duncan (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) took fifth in 2:15.76 and sophomore Sydney Gay (Henrico, Va./Henrico) rounded out the pack with a time of 2:28.99 for eighth place.

Behind Melkun in the 200 breast, Swabb was second (2:29.43) and sophomore Mary Gabe (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) notched a third-place time (2:32.56).

Brassfield led a pack of four Generals in the 100 free, touching the wall in 53.85 for second place. In third place was Schaffer with time of 53.88, while Hardy was fourth in 53.93 and Rolfe timed in at 55.16 for seventh place.

Assisting Brittany Ross in the 200 fly was senior Lauren Kasoff (Owings Mills, Md./Saint Paul's) in second place (2:11.26), first-year Meredith Murphy (Hillsboro, Calif./Saint Ignatius Prep) taking fourth (2:13.78) and senior Rachel Mensch (Edina, Minn./Edina) touching in at sixth (2:19.28).

Senior Colleen Moore (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) recorded the Generals' top time in the 1650 free, coming in second place with a time of 18:12.20. Gay finished in third place in 18:23.04 and senior Kelly Mae Ross (Endicott, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) clocked in at 18:25.55 for sixth.

With the conclusion of this meet, W&L has finished its season.
