W&L Women's Swimming Finishes First at Yellow Jacket Invite
RICHMOND, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's swimming team wrapped up day two of competition at the Yellow Jacket Invitational with six more event wins and a first-place finish on Sunday afternoon at the Collegiate School Aquatics Center.
The Generals recorded 1,309 points to take the top spot. Randolph-Macon (647) and Marymount (512) claimed the second and third places, and Bridgewater (441), Notre Dame of Maryland (202), Greensboro (171), Frostburg State (107), Guilford (73) and West Virginia Tech (12) closed out the team results.
Five different individuals and one relay claimed first place in their respective event on the day. The 400 free relay consisting of seniors Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) and Delaney Rolfe (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park), junior Meredith Hardy (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) and first-year Sarah Schaffer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) clocked in at 3:38.57 for the win. Schaffer also notched a first-place performance in the 100 free, touching in at 54.63 to lead a group of 48 competitors. Sophomore Sydney Gay (Henrico, Va./Henrico) finished first in the 1650 free in a time of 18:25.45, sophomore Caroline Hamp (Avon Lake, Ohio/Elyria Catholic) was first in the 200 back (2:13.00), sophomore Hannah Melkun (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) took the top spot in the 200 breast (2:34.22) and senior Brittany Ross (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) won the 200 fly in 2:14.35.
W&L claimed the top three places in the 200 fly, with Brittany Ross leading the way. Junior Lauren Kasoff (Owings Mills, Md./Saint Paul's) was second in the event in a time of 2:15.51 and first-year Meredith Murphy (Hillsboro, Calif./Saint Ignatius College Prep) placed third (2:15.69).
Along with Schaffer's winning time in the 100 free, three more Generals finished in the Top 10 of the group of 48. Hardy was runner-up after timing in at 54.85, Rolfe took fourth (55.64) and sophomore Kate Feeser (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) was 10th (57.43).
The 200 back also featured three more W&L athletes in the Top 5 to assist Hamp. Clocking in at 2:15.71, first-year Stephanie Foster (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) finished in second place, while first-year Liz Platt (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Area) was third (2:17.57) and first-year Grace Duncan (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) touched the wall in 2:18.48 for fourth place.
Other top performances include second place by sophomore Mary Gabe (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) in the 200 breast (2:36.15), a fourth-place finish by Feeser in the same event (2:39.18), fourth in the 1650 free (18:46.59) by senior Kelly Mae Ross (Endicott, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) and senior Colleen Moore (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) touching the wall in 18:55.25 for fifth place in the 1650 free.
The Generals will take a break in the season before returning to competition on January 12 to host Bridgewater. Action set to begin at 2:00 pm.
