W&L Women's Swimming Tames the Vixens, 114-78
SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's swimming team set four new pool records at the Prothro Natatorium as the Generals took down Sweet Briar, 114-78, on Friday evening.
Sophomore Caroline Hamp (Avon Lake, Ohio/Elyria Catholic), and first-years Stephanie Foster (Columbia, Md./Long Reach), Emma Swabb (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Sarah Schaffer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) teamed up in the 200 medley relay to open competition with a victory in the event and a new pool record of 2:06.61. Foster also set a new pool record while swimming her leg of the 50 back in the 200 medley relay. The 400 medley relay also broke a pool record as Schaffer and Swabb joined senior Delaney Rolfe (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) and junior Meredith Hardy (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) to touch the wall in a time of 4:09.28. Schaffer notched her third win and pool record on the evening with a time of 2:12.73 in the 200 free.
W&L went on to sweep the Top 3 places in five individual events. Helping Schaffer in the 200 free, sophomore Kate Feeser (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) took second in 2:23.26 and senior Kelly Mae Ross (Endicott, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) finished in a close third in 2:23.96.
Sophomore Sydney Gay (Henrico, Va./Henrico) led the way in the 800 free with her first-place performance of 10:04.42. First-year Elizabeth Platt (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Area) touched the wall just two hundredths of a second later in a time of 10:04.44 for second place and senior Rachel Mensch (Edina, Minn./Edina) took third in 10:32.15.
Junior Rebecca Lawrence (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga), Swabb and first-year Rachel Adams-Heard (Austin, Texas/James Bowie) claimed first (29.31), second (29.35) and third (29.60), respectively, in the 50 free. In the 200 IM, Hamp took the top spot, clocking in at 2:37.06, while first-year Lindsey Gilbert (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) was runner-up (2:43.96) and senior Brittany Ross (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) finished third (2:44.20).
Seniors Colleen Moore (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) and Stephanie Krasnov (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) and junior Katie D'Innocenzo (Andover, Mass./Andover) claimed the Top 3 spots in the 200 fly, timing in at 2:38.73, 2:46.44 and 2:53.31, respectively.
The Generals return to the pool on November 17, when they travel to Carnegie Mellon to face CMU, Rochester and Allegheny for a quad meet. Action is set to begin at 11:00 am.
