W&L Women's Swimming Takes ODAC Championship Title

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Four first place finishes on the final day of the ODAC Championships helped lead the Washington and Lee women's swimming team to the conference title on Sunday in Greensboro, N.C.

The awards did not stop in the pool as head coach Kami Gardner was selected as the ODAC Coach of the Year. First year Caroline Hamp (Avon Lake, Ohio/Elyria Catholic) also earned Rookie of the Year honors and junior Delaney Rolfe (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) was chosen for Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

W&L completed day three with 992 total points to take the ODAC team victory. Randolph-Macon was runner-up with 740 points over the three days of competition. Sweet Briar (373), Bridgewater (329), Greensboro (222), Notre Dame of Maryland (212), Hollins (170), Guilford (81) and Emory & Henry (75) wrapped up the results.

The 400 free relay team consisting of senior Jocelyn Cassada (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day), juniors Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) and Rolfe, and sophomore Meredith Hardy (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) broke new boundaries after setting a new school and meet record with a time of 3:33.95 and took first place.

Cassada highlighted the individual results with her B-cut qualifying mark in the 200 back timing in at 2:06.59. Senior Joanie Hudak (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet) opened the day with a winning performance of 18:11.45 in the 1650 free. The Generals' final first place came from junior Brittany Ross (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) in the 200 fly clocking in at 2:11.84.

Assisting Ross in the 200 fly, sophomore Lauren Kasoff (Owings Mills, Md./Saint Paul's) took second in the same event with a time of 2:14.32. Rolfe placed third in 2:16.58 and junior Rachel Mensch (Edina, Minn./Edina) was fourth timing in at 2:19.88.

In the 200 back, senior Katie Salvati (Roselle Park, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy) touched right behind Cassada with a time of 2:11.95. Hamp posted a 2:13.39 to take third place and Mensch finished sixth recording a 2:18.62.

Four Generals advanced to the finals in the 200 breast with senior Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York) leading the pack with a third place finish in 2:27.61. First year Hannah Melkun (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) was fourth (2:29.63), senior Erin Scwartz (Laytonsville, Md./Stone Ridge) was sixth (2:34.35) and first year Mary Gabe 9 (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) finished eighth (2:37.38).

In the 1650 free, junior Colleen Moore (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) finished fourth (18:22.58), senior Elizabeth Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Prep) came in fifth (18:28.30) and Ross was sixth (18:29.85).

W&L clocked in three athletes in the 100 free finals including a third place finish by Hardy with a time of 54.35. Brassfield clocked in at 54.52 to take fourth and sophomore Rebecca Lawrence (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) was seventh in 56.12.

With the conclusion of this meet, the Generals have finished their regular season with select athletes having an opportunity to advance to the NCAA National Championship meet to be competed March 21-24.
