W&L WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO MORAVIAN, 2-1, IN NCAA TOURNAMENT

CARLISLE, Pa. -- Moravian College's Megan Collins scored a pair of goals to lift the Greyhounds to a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Washington and Lee in the opening round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament held at Dickinson College.

W&L (13-3-3) took a 1-0 lead at the 55:10 mark as freshman forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) headed in a ball played by freshman defender Marisa Van Brunt (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) off a corner kick.

However, the Generals' lead would be short-lived as Collins found the net off a free kick just 2:11 later to knot the game at 1-1. The game remained tied through one overtime, and Collins tallied the game-winner on another free kick 2:46 into the second overtime session.

Freshman goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) played all 102:46 in goal, making two saves. Caitlin Corrigan also played the entire game in goal for the Greyhounds, posting three stops.

Washington and Lee's season now comes to an end, while Moravian (16-5-1) advances to the second round where it will face regional host Dickinson.

W&L WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO LYNCHBURG, 1-0

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior defender Kelly Vornadore (Springfield, Va./Bishop Ireton) scored an unassisted tally at the 68:10 mark to lift the third-seeded Lynchburg women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over second-seeded Washington and Lee in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.

Following a Hornets corner kick, the ball remained loose in the Generals' box until Vornadore fired a shot into the back of the W&L net.

The Generals had a number of scoring chances in the first half, including a shot by senior midfielder Gina Von Sternberg (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) which was kicked towards the far corner of the net, but Lynchburg senior netminder Katie DeLorenzo (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Morris Catholic) made a diving save to keep the game scoreless.

Both teams fired off nine shots, while the Hornets held an 8-5 edge in corner kicks.

W&L freshman goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) made three saves and DeLorenzo stopped five shots.

Lynchburg improved to 15-3-2 and advances to the ODAC Championship Game, while the Generals fell to 13-2-3 and will wait to see if they receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

W&L WOMEN'S SOCCER SHUTS OUT EMORY & HENRY, 7-0

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) notched a hat trick to help lead the second-seeded and 24th-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 7-0 win over seventh-seeded Emory & Henry in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field. The win was W&L's school-record 12th shutout of the season.

The Generals (13-1-3) took a 1-0 lead just 3:30 into the game on an unassisted goal by freshman forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall). W&L extended its lead to 2-0 at 18:53 when Wiltshire scored off a feed from senior midfielder Gina Von Sternberg (Houston, Texas/Episcopal). Just 59 seconds later, Wiltshire notched an unassisted tally to make it 3-0. Sophomore forward Shana Oltmans (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) gave the Generals a 4-0 lead heading into halftime with an unassisted goal at 29:01.

The Generals scored three second half goals, including Oltmans' second tally of the contest at 65:39 to cap the scoring.

W&L freshman goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) played the first 63:10, while junior Emily Binns (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) was between the posts for the final 26:50 and made one save. Sophomore netminder Meredith Ledford (Chattanooga, Tenn./Chattanooga Christian) played all 90 minutes and stopped nine shots for the Wasps (10-8-1).

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts third-seeded Lynchburg in the ODAC semifinals. The time of the game is still to be determined.

W&L WOMEN'S SOCCER TIES EASTERN MENNONITE, 0-0

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Eastern Mennonite junior goalkeeper Joy Shaiebly (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) made 16 saves to help to Royals to a 0-0 double-overtime tie against No. 24 Washington and Lee in ODAC women's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals put constant pressure on Shaiebly and the Royals defense throughout the game by outshooting EMU, 30-3, but Shaiebly was up to the task.

W&L extended its unbeaten streak to 15 consecutive games, while improving to 12-1-3 overall and 9-0-3 in the ODAC. It also tied the school record of 11 shutouts, which was set during the 2003 season. Eastern Mennonite fell to 8-6-3 overall and 6-3-2 in the ODAC.

Freshman goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) played all 110 minutes for the Generals.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament at Watt Field. The opponent and time are still to be determined.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman midfielder Katie Kern (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) scored a goal and added an assist to help lead the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 4-1 win over St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals (12-1-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 9:12 gone-by when freshman forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) scored off an assist from freshman defender Marisa Van Brunt (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville).

The score remained 1-0 until Kern tallied an unassisted goal just 4:02 into the second half to make it 2-0. W&L extended its advantage to 3-0 at 53:23 when Kern fed junior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), who put her shot into the back of the Seahawks' net.

W&L junior midfielder Jamie Dorsey (Cockeysville, Md./McDonogh School) made it 4-0 on an unassisted tally at 82:10. Just 23 seconds later, St. Mary's got on the scoreboard on an unassisted goal by freshman forward Sarah Grady (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) to make the final score 4-1.

The Generals held a 13-11 edge in shots and a 13-7 advantage in corner kicks.

W&L freshman goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) made four saves, while freshman netminder Marie Oben (Glenn Dale, Md./St. Mary's Annapolis) also stopped four shots for the Seahawks.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee freshman forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) scored an unassisted goal just 29 seconds into the second overtime in lifting the Generals to a 1-0 double-overtime win over Lynchburg in ODAC women's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals (11-1-2, 9-0-1) had several opportunities to dent the scoring column throughout the game, but could not slip a shot past Hornet senior goalkeeper Katie DeLorenzo (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Morris Catholic) until Van Devender's game-winner. DeLorenzo made seven saves in the contest, including a diving save on an angled shot by W&L junior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) during the first overtime session.

Lynchburg (12-2-2, 8-1) also had a great scoring opportunity during regulation, but junior midfielder Melanie Chidester's (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) shot sailed just wide of a wide-open goal late in the second period.

Wiltshire gave the Generals (10-1-2) a 1-0 lead just 31 seconds into the game on an unassisted goal. W&L pushed its advantage to 2-0 when Wiltshire fed freshman forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall), who put her shot into the back of the Saints' net at 41:21.

After a scoreless first half, the Maroons (4-6-3, 2-5-1) took a 1-0 lead at the 46:26 mark when freshman forward Tamara Alcalde scored off a pass from freshman forward Kristen McCoy. The Generals (9-1-2, 8-0-1) tied the game at 1-1 on an unassisted goal by freshman forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) at 50:16.

W&L then took a 2-1 advantage at the 71:51 mark on an unassisted goal by freshman midfielder Kate Corr (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional). Less than six minutes later, sophomore forward Martha Caulkins (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) capped the scoring with an unassisted tally.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore forward Shana Oltmans (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) scored two goals and junior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) notched a goal and two assists to help lead Washington and Lee to its school-record sixth consecutive shutout with a 5-0 victory over Sweet Briar in ODAC women's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals (8-1-2, 7-0-1) took a 1-0 lead at the 8:48 mark when Oltmans scored off a feed from Wiltshire. Just over seven minutes later, Wiltshire tallied an unassisted goal to make it 2-0. Oltmans then gave W&L a 3-0 lead heading into halftime on an unassisted tally at 32:25.

In the second half, senior midfielder Gina Von Sternberg (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) took a pass from Wiltshire and buried her shot into the back of the Vixens' goal to give W&L a 4-0 lead at 51:13. Freshman defender Marisa Van Brunt (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) ended the scoring with her first collegiate goal at the 75:30 mark.

The shutout was the Generals' fifth in a row and seventh overall for the 2005 season. Freshman Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) played all 90 minutes in goal for W&L (7-1-2, 6-0-1), stopping two shots. Danielle Brisotti also played the entire goal between the posts for Guilford (7-4-1, 3-3-0), notching two saves.

For the game, W&L outshot the Quakers, 12-7, and held a 14-0 advantage on corner kicks.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Three different Generals scored two goals and freshman midfielder Katie Kern (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) tallied a school-record tying three assists as the Washington and Lee women's soccer team shutout Bridgewater, 9-0, in ODAC women's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals (5-1-2, 4-0-1) got on the board at the 6:54 mark when junior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) scored the first of her two goals off an assist from sophomore defender Haley Bunting (Houston, Texas/St. John's). Wiltshire made it 2-0 on an unassisted goal at 10:41. The Generals upped their advantage to 3-0 when freshman forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) tallied an unassisted goal at 14:54. W&L went into halftime with a 4-0 lead after freshman forward Erica Giordano (Cranford, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy) scored off an assist from Kern at 41:55.

W&L scored two more goals within the first 14:07 of the second half to push their advantage to 6-0. W&L WOMEN'S SOCCER KNOCKS OFF HOLLINS, 10-0

ROANOKE, Va. -- Freshman midfielder Katie Kern (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) scored two goals and junior midfielder Blair Haws (Fort Worth, Texas/Trinity Valley) tallied a goal and two assists as Washington and Lee shutout Hollins University, 10-0, in ODAC women's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon in Roanoke, Va.

Kern gave the Generals (4-1-1, 3-0) a 1-0 lead just 1:17 into the game when she scored off an assist from junior midfielder Jamie Dorsey (Cockeysville, Md./McDonogh School). Less than five minutes later, freshman Erica Giordano (Cranford, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy) scored off a feed from junior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) to give the W&L a 2-0 lead. Kern then notched her second goal of the game at 12:15 off a pass from junior midfielder Cara Burton (Spring, Texas/Oak Klein) to make the score 3-0. W&L would head into halftime with a 6-0 advantage.

W&L junior goalkeeper Emily Binns (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) played all 90 minutes to pick up her first win of the season. Lindsay Lucas also played all 90 minutes for Hollins (2-3, 0-2) and made 16 saves.

W&L WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS N.C. WESLEYAN, 2-1

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team scored two first half goals and held on to defeat North Carolina Wesleyan, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals (3-1-1) dented the scoreboard at the 28:25 mark after sophomore forward Shana Oltmans (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) scored off a feed from junior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate). W&L went into halftime with a 2-0 lead when senior defender Conner Esworthy (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) scored off an assist from sophomore defender Haley Bunting (Houston, Texas/St. John's) with just 47 seconds remaining in the half.

The Lady Bishops (2-3) closed to within 2-1 at the 66:02 mark when sophomore midfielder Mayra Gomez (Salinas, Calif./Alisal) scored off of a free kick. However, they wouldn't be able to score the equalizer.

W&L outshot NCW, 29-2, and held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Freshman goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) made one save for the Generals, while freshman netminder Bryanne Godfrey (Farmingdale, N.J./Howell) stopped 16 shots for the Lady Bishops.

ASHLAND, Va. -- Junior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) scored on a penalty kick at the 82:00 mark to lift the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon in Ashland, Va.

With the win, the Generals improved to 2-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the ODAC. The Yellow Jackets fell to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the ODAC.

W&L freshman goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) played all 90 minutes and made two saves, while senior netminder Liz Lombardo also played all 90 minutes and stopped 12 shots for Randolph-Macon.

Washington and Lee returns to the field on Sunday when it hosts North Carolina Wesleyan at 1:00 pm.

W&L WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS RMWC, 8-0

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) tied a school record with four goals in leading the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to an 8-0 win over Randolph-Macon Woman's College on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals (1-1-1, 1-0) got on the board just 28 seconds into the contest as senior midfielder Gina Von Sternberg (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) scored off an assist from sophomore forward Shana Oltmans (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley). Von Sternberg then assisted on a goal by junior forward Cara Burton (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak) at the 5:17 mark for a 2-0 lead.

W&L pushed to a 3-0 lead just 2:42 later as Wiltshire scored the first of her career-high four goals off assists from Burton and sophomore defender Haley Bunting (Houston, Texas/St. John's). Another Wiltshire goal at the 14:12 mark gave the Generals a 4-0 lead and a goal by freshman forward Erica Giordano (Cranford, N.J./Mount Saint Mary) at the 31:17 mark gave W&L a 5-0 halftime edge.

Oltmans would then feed Wiltshire for two more second half goals and junior forward Sarah Helms (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) ended the scoring with a goal at the 64:26 mark.

Freshman Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) played the opening 45 minutes in goal, making one save, while junior Emily Binns (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) played the final 45 minutes and did not face a shot.

Junior Emily Karnes (Richmond, Va.) stopped six shots in goal for the WildCats (1-5-0, 0-1).

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Randolph-Macon for a 1:00 pm contest.

FROSTBURG, Md. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team battled through 90 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods and came away with a 1-1 tie against the College of Wooster on Sunday afternoon at the Frostburg State Invitational.

The Generals (0-1-1) dented the scoreboard just 4:15 into the game when senior midfielder Gina Von Sternberg (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) took a pass from sophomore forward Shana Oltmans (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) and fired her shot into the back of the Fighting Scots' net. Wooster (1-1-2) then tied the score at 1-1 at the 15:30 mark on a goal by Erin Lustio.

Both defenses then took control of the game as neither team was able to find the back of the opponents' goal.

Wooster outshot W&L, 16-11, but the Generals held a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.

Freshman goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) made seven saves for the Generals, while Kate Kiley stopped four shots for Wooster.

FROSTBURG, Md. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team opened up its 2005 season with a 3-0 loss to Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon at the Frostburg State Invitational.

The Blue Jays (4-0) took a 1-0 lead just 1:42 into the game on an unassisted goal by freshman midfielder Kiley Keelin. JHU extended its lead to 2-0 when junior forward Laurie Baumann scored off an assist by junior midfielder Jessi McKenzie at the 20:03 mark. The Blue Jays then ended the scoring when sophomore forward Kim Lane scored on a corner kick at 56:06.

The Generals (0-1) were outshot, 16-5, and each team had four corner kicks.

Freshman goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) made five saves in her collegiate debut for the Generals, while senior netminder Jen Goebel stopped three shots for Johns Hopkins.
