BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Despite a goal from junior forward Caroline Peters (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Latin School) the fifth-seeded Washington and Lee women's soccer team fell to fourth-seeded Bridgewater, 2-1, in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Bridgewater.
The Eagles (15-4-1) earned the victory behind a pair of first-half goals from junior forward Bailey Kratz.
Bridgewater took a 1-0 lead at the 21:34 mark after Kratz slipped a shot into the back of the net off of an assist from senior forward Keri Rager.
Kratz scored the game-winner in the 44th minute when she collected the ball outside the 18-yard box and fired it into the upper corner of the net just past the hands of W&L (10-6-1) sophomore goalkeeper Leeann Passaro (Upper Saddle River, N.J. / The Lawrenceville School). The Eagles took a 2-0 lead into intermission.
W&L tallied its lone goal of the game in the 56th minute. Senior midfielder Chandler Wickers (Portola Valley, Calif. / Menlo School) had a free kick just outside of the 18-yard box. She sent the ball toward the goal, which forced BC senior keeper Hayley Talbott off her line. Off a deflection, Peters secured possession and directed her shot into the lower corner of the goal.
The Generals had a chance to even the score on a penalty kick with 10 minutes remaining in the contest, but Talbott saved it to give Bridgewater the 2-1 victory.
For the game, Bridgewater held a slim 16-15 advantage in shots, while W&L held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks. Passaro played the full 90 minutes in goal and made seven saves for the Generals. Talbott also played the full contest in goal for the Eagles and made three stops.
