FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Washington and Lee women's soccer defeated the Eagles of Mary Washington, 2-1, on a late second half goal by junior midfielder Katie Rossi (Wyoming, Del./Caesar Rodney) on Sunday afternoon.
At the 22:56 mark in the first half, W&L (3-1-0) was awarded a penalty kick after an Eagles defender fouled junior forward Katherine Rush (Cornelius, N.C./Providence Day School) in the box. Junior midfielder Haley Ward (Federal Way, Wash./Federal Way) took the kick and sent the ball into the top left of the goal to give the Generals the 1-0 lead.
Just 1:12 into the second half, UMW (2-2-0) answered with a goal by Erin Reynolds to knot the score at 1-1. The score remained tied until the 76:43 mark, when Rossi netted an unassisted tally to bring the score to 2-1 in the Generals favor.
For the game, the Eagles outshot the Generals 11-9, while the Blue and White held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore keeper Addie Healy (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove) recorded the victory for the Generals, finishing with five saves. UMW goalie Alyssa Goodwin suffered the loss and finished with one save.
W&L will be back in action on September 24th with its first ODAC contest, travelling to Eastern Mennonite for a 4:00 pm game.
