FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the 2013 season, falling to Rowan in the opening day of the Mary Washington Tournament by a score of 2-0 on Saturday.
Each team took eight shots in the opening half, but the Profs (3-0) held the Generals (2-1) at bay, with first-year goalkeeper Carleigh Trivino posting five first-half saves. Rowan then got on the board in the 34th-minute as senior midfielder Dana Sakalsky found the net off an assist from junior forward Erika Suhl. The Profs broke through again just before halftime when Sakalsky scored unassisted at the 41:56 mark.
W&L outshot the Profs by a count of 9-1 in the second half, but Trivino posted four more saves in the final 45 minutes to preserve the shutout win for Rowan.
For the game, the Generals held a 17-9 advantage on shots and a 10-3 edge on corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Addie Healy (Waterford, Va. / Woodgrove) notched two saves for W&L. Trivino finished with nine total saves for Rowan.
Washington and Lee will compete in the second day of the Mary Washington Tournament on Sunday. The Generals will take on the host Eagles at 3:00 pm.
