W&L Women's Soccer Opens With a 3-0 Win Over GC
LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee junior midfielder Holley Beasley (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) tallied one goal and one assist to help lead the women's soccer team to a 3-0 triumph over Greensboro College in the 2013 season-opener on Friday afternoon at Watt Field.
Junior forward Katherine Rush (Cornelius, N.C./Providence Day School) started the scoring for the Generals (1-0) in the 42nd minute, as she collected a pass from Beasley and sent the ball past GC sophomore keeper Jessica Thatcher (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) for a 1-0 lead.
Beasley scored just three minutes into in the second stanza off an assist from first-year midfielder Lucy Duet (Covington, La./Saint Scholastica Academy), giving the Generals a 2-0 lead. Classmate Haley Ward (Federal Way, Wash./Federal Way) netted her first goal of the season after scoring indirectly off a corner kick at the 68:27 mark.
For the game, W&L held an advantage over the Pride (0-1) in shots (25-3) and corner kicks (9-0).
Sophomore goalkeeper Addie Healy (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove) picked up the win in goal, playing the opening 67:15 and recording two saves. Junior Kingsley Schroeder (Dayton, Ohio/Westminister School/Miami Valley) played the final 22:45 and finished the game with one save.
Thatcher suffered the loss in goal for the Pride, playing all 90:00 and recording five saves.
The Generals return to action on Saturday as they host the University of Dallas for a 1:00 pm match at Watt Field.
