ROANOKE, Va. – Senior midfielder Ainsley Daigle (Lafayette, La./Episcopal School of Acadiana) netted the game-winning goal off a penalty kick in overtime to push the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Roanoke on Wednesday evening at Kerr Stadium.
After ending regulation at a 2-2 tie, the contest was sent into extra time. RC was called for a foul in their own box, setting up Daigle for the penalty kick and the decisive goal in the 103rd minute.
W&L took an early 1-0 lead, as sophomore midfielder Lauren Abraham's (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin) shot hit the post and went into the feet of Daigle, who then scored in the right side of the net with game time at 2:06.
The Maroons answered with two goals to bring their lead to 2-1 by the 16:02 mark. Rebecca Adams used a corner kick by Stephanie Parenteau to land the ball into the right side of the goal at 10:52. In the 17th minute, Carmen Graves headed the ball in the goal for RC's second tally (2-1) after Parenteau knocked off another corner kick. The score remained at 2-1 in Roanoke's favor heading into halftime.
Neither team could land a shot in the second half until first-year midfielder Becca Dunn (Houston, Texas/Memorial) broke the scoring drought and tied up the game at 2-2 with a goal at 70:14. Few scoring opportunities came from either opponent in the rest of the second half, sending the contest into overtime and resulting in the game-winning penalty kick by W&L.
With the win, the Generals improve to 7-2-1 (5-1-1 ODAC) on the season, while the Maroons fall to 6-4-1 (4-2 ODAC) overall.
In goal for the Blue and White was first-year Addie Healy (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove), who registered two saves and two goals-against in 102:27. Carolyn Sarbacher spent the entire game in net for RC, stopping two shots and tallying three goals-against.
W&L returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Eastern Mennonite for an 11:00 am contest.
