SEWANEE, Tenn. – With just 41 seconds left in the second overtime, the Washington and Lee women's soccer team used a penalty kick to claim a 1-0 win over Rhodes on Day Two of The University of the South Tournament Sunday afternoon.
After sophomore forward Katie Rossi (Wyoming, Del./Caesar Rodney) was tackled in the box by Rhodes, senior midfielder Ainsley Daigle (Lafayette, La./Episcopal School of Acadiana) netted the game-winning goal off the penalty kick position.
With the win, W&L improves to 2-1 on the season, while Rhodes falls to 2-1-1 on the year.
Both defenses showed great discipline, as neither team was able to notch a goal in the first three periods, despite 17 shots by the Generals and 16 by the Lynxes for the game.
Goalkeepers also stepped up to the pressure with a total of 16 saves being recorded between RC and W&L. First-year Addie Healy (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove) spent the entire game in goal for the Generals, registering nine saves, and Allison Cowling tallied six saves in 109:19 for the Lynxes.
W&L returns to the field Wednesday, when it hosts Hollins for a 4:00 pm contest.
