FOREST, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) has released its 2012 Women's Soccer Preseason Poll and the Washington and Lee women's soccer team is expected to finish third this season as voted by the league's coaches.
With 12 first-place votes, defending champion Lynchburg claims the top spot and 144 total points. Virginia Wesleyan sits second after collecting the final top nod and 130 points. W&L is tabbed for third with 118 points and is followed by Roanoke (110) and Bridgewater (106) to complete the top five. Rounding out the poll are Shenandoah (87), Guilford (74), Randolph-Macon (69), Eastern Mennonite (53), Emory & Henry (45), Randolph (35), Hollins (25) and Sweet Briar (18).
Both Lynchburg and Virginia Wesleyan are listed on the NSCAA Division III Preseason Top 25 with LC at 15th and VWC at 20th.
In 2011, the Generals finished the season with a 13-4-2 overall record after advancing to the ODAC Quarterfinals where they lost to eventual-champion Lynchburg, 1-0. They return two first team all-conference selections in sophomores Holley Beasley (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) and Katherine Rush (Cornelius, N.C./Providence Day School), who are included in a group of returning scorers that registered 76 percent of the team's points a season ago. Seven starters from the 2011 squad will also enter the field again this year.
W&L will kick off the 2012 season on Saturday, September 1, when it hosts Southern Virginia for a 3:00 pm contest.
