LEXINGTON, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) released its 2008-09 All-Academic Team on Wednesday and Washington and Lee placed 241 student-athletes on the list.
A total of 1,190 student-athletes were honored conference-wide, with W&L claiming the highest total of honorees from the conference’s 14 schools. W&L had 241 selections, followed by Lynchburg (128), Bridgewater (127), Virginia Wesleya n (92), Randolph-Macon (80), Emory & Henry (79), Guilford (76), Hampden-Sydney (76), Roanoke (73), Eastern Mennonite (70), Hollins (53), Randolph (40), Sweet Briar (37) and Catholic (18).
Eligibility for the ODAC All-Academic Team is open to any student-athlete that competes in a conference-sponsored sport, regardless of academic class. He or she must achieve at least a 3.25 grade point average for the year to be considered for an ODAC All-Academic Award.
Among the notable members of the ODAC All-Academic Team for W&L were 45 first team all-conference honorees and 10 All-Americans. Additionally, 2009 graduates Harry St. John (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) and Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) were named the ODAC Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year for the 2008-09 school year.
Washington and Lee won eight conference championships during the 2008-09 season and claimed the ODAC Dan Wooldridge Champion Cup for the top overall athletic program in the conference for the 13th time in the 15 years that it has been awarded.
