Wrestling at Centennial Championships

WESTMINSTER, Md. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team completed its 2008-09 season with a seventh place finish out of eight teams at the Centennial Conference Championships hosted by McDaniel College on Saturday afternoon.

The Merchant Marine Academy claimed the title with 116.0 points and were followed by Ursinus (66.0), McDaniel (54.0), Muhlenberg (53.5), Stevens (47.0), Gettysburg (29.0), W&L (27.0) and Johns Hopkins (19.0).

The Generals had three placewinners at the championships led by first-year Ben Ersing (Beverly, Mass./St. John's Prep), who went 3-1 to place third in the 125-pound weight class. Ersing opened with a pin of McDaniel's Sean Ensign (1:54), but was defeated by Alex Black of Ursinus with a technical fall (17-2) in 5:18. He then advanced by injury default and pinned Gettysburg's Abe Evans in 1:22 in the third-place match.

First-year Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) finished fourth at 133 pounds. Campbell fell to Muhlenberg's Billy Hall in his opener, but defeated Getttysburg's Michael Slabinski, 12-8. He then advanced past Stevens' Mark Bistis by disqualification, but was a medical forfeit in the third-place match.

First-year David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) also finished fourth in the 157-pound weight class. He opened with a 5-3 win over Scott Lowe of the Merchant Marines, but then lost to Andrew Goldstein of Gettysburg, 11-6. Dennis then pinned Keith Swanson of Muhlenberg in 2:20, before dropping a 10-8 decision to Stevens' Leo Dormann in the third-place match.

 

Wrestling vs. Muhlenberg

The Generals fell to Muhlenberg, 26-13, dropped a 34-6 decision to Ursinus, then were knocked off, 25-12, by McDaniel.

The Generals were paced by four wrestlers who notched 2-1 individual records for the day. At 165 pounds, senior Rob Terrin (Baltimore, Md./Friends) posted a 20-5 technical fall victory over Muhlenberg's Ken Ludwig and also notched a 5-3 win over John Whitman of Ursinus. He was then defeated by Zach Hentrick of McDaniel, 9-5.

First-year Ben Ersing (Beverly, Mass./St. John's Prep) also went 2-1 at 125 pounds, beginning his day with a 10-5 win over Muhlenberg's Ryan Hoffman, before being pinned by Ursinus' Ben Garelick in 3:46. Ersing recovered to finish his afternoon with a 10-4 win over Sean Ensign of McDaniel.

First-year Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) also went 2-1 at 133 pounds. He defeated Muhlenberg's William Hall by a 5-1 count, fell to Ursinus' Stephen Kingsland, 5-2, and defeated Peter Caruso of McDaniel, 2-0, when he notched a takedown just before the end of the sudden victory session.

Also sporting a 2-1 record on the day was first-year 157-pounder David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood). Dennis defeated Keith Swanson of Muhlenberg, 7-1, before falling to Christopher Springer of Ursinus, 7-3. He then finished with a 7-3 decision over Matt Peters of McDaniel.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it competes in the Centennial Conference Championships beginning at 11:00 am.

Wrestling vs. Apprentice School

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team fell to 4-6 overall with a heartbreaking 22-20 loss to the Apprentice School on Wednesday evening at Doremus Gym.

The Generals trailed 16-12 heading into the final four matches, but won the first three to assume a 21-16 lead heading into the final bout. In the last match, W&L junior 184-pounder Richard Knack (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) was pinned by NNA sophomore Daniel Hare (Smithfield, Va./Smithfield) with just 46 seconds left in the match as the Builders (10-8) slipped away with the victory.  The Generals were docked one team point for unsportsmanlike conduct, making the final score 22-20.

First-year David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) began the Generals' rally from 16-12 down with a 1-0 decision over junior Matt Perry (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith) at 157 pounds. Senior Rob Terrin (Baltimore, Md./Friends) gave the Generals an 18-16 lead with a 7-4 win over junior Will Harcum (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) at 165 pounds and junior Jon Brown (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) notched an 11-6 decision over first-year Charles Mills (Republic, Wash./Republic) for W&L's 21-16 lead.

Senior 285-pounder John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) was also victorious for W&L, knocking off NNA senior Cecil Lee (Portsmouth, Va./Churchland), 6-5. The win avenged three earlier losses to Lee this season. Christopher improved to 15-5 on the year, while Lee fell to 33-7.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it competes in a quad at McDaniel College begining at 11:00 am. The Generals will take on McDaniel, Muhlenberg and Ursinus.

Wrestling at West Virginia Tech

MONTGOMERY, W.Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team picked up four forfeit wins en route to a 39-9 victory at West Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon.

The Generals received forfeit victories at 125, 133, 184 and 197 pounds and also gained wins by pin at 157 and 285 pounds.

First-year David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) logged a win by fall over Mike Tyler at 157 pounds, producing the victory in 1:56 for his third-straight win. Senior John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) also notched a win by fall, defeating Ben Harper in 2:41 at 285 pounds. For Christopher, it was his 10th win in his last 11 matches.

Senior Rob Terrin (Baltimore, Md./Friends) won for the eighth time in his last 10 matches, producing a 7-2 victory over John Jones at 165 pounds.

With the win, the Generals improved to 4-5 on the season. They return to action on Wednesday as they host the Apprentice School for a 7:00 pm dual match.

Wrestling vs. Johns Hopkins

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team fell to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the Centennial Conference with a 24-18 loss to Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon.

The Generals were victorious in five of the 10 weight classes, but could not overcome two losses by pin and another by medical default as the Blue Jays (4-6, 2-3) posted their eighth-straight win over W&L.

Washington and Lee jumped out to a 6-0 lead on the strength of wins by decision at the 125-pound and 133-pound weight classes. First-year Ben Ersing (Beverly, Mass./St. John's Prep) notched a 5-1 win over JHU first-year Adam Stevens (New York, N.Y./Collegiate) at 125, while first-year Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) posted an 8-3 victory over first-year Mike Testa (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) at 133.

The Blue Jays registered wins at 141 and 149 to take a 9-6 advantage, before the Generals surged to a 12-9 lead as first-year David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) pinned JHU first-year William Selba (Selbyville, Del./Mt. St. Joseph) in 4:16.

After a loss at 165 knotted the score at 12-12, the Generals again assumed the lead (15-12) as junior Jon Brown (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) recorded a 3-2 win over senior Mike Keane (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) in the 174 weight class. However, Hopkins secured the match with pins at 184 and 197 to assume a 24-15 lead heading into the final bout, where senior John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) notched a 3-2 win over sophomore Matt Rugani (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) for the final margin.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to West Virginia Tech for a 2:00 pm match.

Wrestling at Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team improved to 3-4 on the season with a 51-6 victory over Southern Virginia on Wednesday evening.

The Generals picked up forfeit wins in four weight classes and won three other classes by pins. First-year Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) pinned Brandon Flood at 133 pounds in 4:43, while first-year David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) pinned his 149-pound opponent, Ahmed Dorghoud, in 6:59. Senior John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) recorded a fall at 285 pounds, downing Pete Hansen in 4:37.

Other winners for the Generals included junior 141-pounder Sammy Brusca (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) and senior 165-pounder Rob Terrin (Baltimore, Md./Friends). Brusca notched a 17-0 win over Kevin Valverde, while Terrin posted a 10-1 win over Jon Eldredge.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Johns Hopkins for a dual match beginning at 2:00 pm.

Wrestling at Stevens Tech

HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team went 0-2 in a tri-match at Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday morning.  The Generals fell to the host Ducks by a score of 36-6 and then dropped a 39-6 decision to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.  W&L's match with McDaniel was postponed.

Christopher dropped his first match to Stevens' James Roarty by a score of 3-1 in overtime, then recovered to down John Gosselin of the Merchant Marines, 7-5 in overtime, in the finale.

Terrin opened with a 9-3 setback to Joe Favia of Stevens, but also recovered to post a win against USMMA, defeating Seth Ching, 2-1.

Wrestling vs. King's Point

HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team went 0-2 in a tri-match at Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday morning.  The Generals fell to the host Ducks by a score of 36-6 and then dropped a 39-6 decision to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.  W&L's match with McDaniel was postponed.

Wrestling vs. W&L Invitational

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team finished fourth out of eight teams in the W&L Invitational held on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center.

Waynesburg finished as the team champion with 123.0 points, followed by Washington & Jefferson (114.5), Johns Hopkins (107.5), W&L (83.0), Muhlenberg (76.0), West Virginia Tech (44.0), Scranton (34.0) and Southern Virginia (25.0). W&J first-year Zach Cecchetti (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler after claiming the championship of the 125-pound bracket.

The Generals claimed the championship of two weight classes, had one runner-up finish, one third-place finish and one fourth-place finish.

Senior Rob Terrin (Baltimore, Md./Friends) won the 165-pound bracket, going 3-0 with a pair of wins by pin. Terrin pinned W&J's John Sabatelli (3:36) in the championship match.

Senior John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) also went 3-0 in claiming the 285-pound title. He notched one win via pin and downed Johns Hopkins' Matt Rugani in the finals, 5-2.

First-year David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) received a first round bye at 149 pounds and pinned Waynesburg's Jesse Byerly (3:34), the top seed, but fell to Rob Kein of Muhlenberg in the finals, 3-1.

First-year Ben Ersing (Beverly, Mass./St. John's Prep) finished the day 2-1 overall at 125 pounds after dropping his opening match. He recovered to defeat Waynesburg's Josh Klimko in the third-place match by a score of 16-3.

First-year Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) completed his day 2-2 overall at 133 pounds, falling to Johns Hopkins' Michael Testa in the third-place match, 3-2.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Stevens Institute of Technology for a tri with the host Ducks, McDaniel and the Merchant Marine Academy. Action begins at 10:00 am.

Wrestling vs. Southern Virginia

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team opened its dual match slate with a win as it defeated Southern Virginia, 45-9, on Wednesday evening at Doremus Gym.

The Generals picked up forfeit wins in five weight classes and won three of the five contested matches. At 149 pounds, first-year David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) pinned Southern Virginia first-year Jake Shearer in 1:02, while at 165 pounds, senior Rob Terrin (Baltimore, Md./Friends) pinned SVU first-year Dallin Rust (Ridgeley, W.Va./Frankfort) in 4:38. At 285 pounds, senior John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) knocked off SVU senior Pete Hansen (Bountiful, Utah/Viewmont), 7-5.

Winners for Southern Virginia were first-year Spencer Hirt (Barrow, Alaska/Barrow) and sophomore Peter Rose (Heber City, Utah/Wasatch). Hirt defeated W&L sophomore Sammy Brusca (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) by a score of 2-1 at 141 pounds, while Rose pinned W&L sophomore Keith Jaworski (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) in 4:14 at 157 pounds.

Wrestling at Ursinus Invitational

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team was in action on Sunday afternoon as it competed in the Fall Brawl hosted by Ursinus College.

No team scoring was kept, but several individuals fared well in their respective weight classes, spearheaded by the performance of senior 285-pounder John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons), who finished 3-2 overall. Christopher pinned NYU’s Jordan Schimmenti in the opening round (2:43), before being pinned by the Apprentice School’s Cecil Lee in the second round (6:47). In the consolation bracket, Christopher knocked off Thiel’s Nate Meyer, 5-1, and pinned Jamal Doresy of Thiel in 2:42, before evetually falling to Bryan Keyser of Elizabethtown (2:02).

Also for the Generals, first-years Ben Ersing (Beverly, Mass./St. John’s Prep), Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier), David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) and junior Jon Brown (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) all finished 2-2 on the day. Brown advanced to the semifinals of the 174-pound bracket before falling to Ben Finelli of Usrinus, 12-3. Ersing competed at 125 pounds, Campbell wrestled at 133 pounds and Dennis wrestled at 149 pounds.

Washington and Lee returns to action on December 3 as it hosts Southern Virginia for a 7:00 pm dual match.

Wrestling vs. W&L Fall Classic

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team opened its 2008-09 season by hosting the W&L Fall Classic on Saturday morning at Doremus Gymnasium.

No team scoring was kept and four schools (Longwood, Newport News Apprentice, Southern Virginia and W&L) competed in each of the 10 weight classes.

Three individuals went 2-0 on the day to pace Washington and Lee led by sophomore Marshall Olszewski (Manchester, Md./McDonogh), who posted a pair of wins by pin in the 157-pound bracket. Olszewski first knocked off Ray O’Connor of Newport News Apprentice with a fall in 1:37, then he pinned Southern Virginia’s Josh Pace in 2:17.

At 133 pounds, first-year Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) went 2-0, defeating Newport News Apprentice’s Todd Gular in his first match, 15-6, then downing Southern Virginia’s Brandon Flood, 15-6.

First-year David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) also went 2-0 in the 149-pound bracket. Dennis notched a pin over Jake Shearer of Southern Virginia (1:48) and then downed NNA’s Ricky Anderson, 4-2.

Washington and Lee will return to action on Sun., Nov. 16 as it travels to Collegeville, Pa., to take part in the Ursinus Invitational beginning at 9:30 am.
