Wrestling at Centennial Conf. Championship

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team finished eighth out of eight teams at the Centennial Conference Championship hosted by Ursinus College on Saturday afternoon.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy took first place with 99.5 points and was followed by Ursinus (68.5), Stevens Tech (60.0), Johns Hopkins (45.0), Gettysburg (35.5), Muhlenberg (34.5), McDaniel (28.0) and W&L (25.5).

Individually, the Generals had four place-winners led by senior 165-pounder Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers), who finished as the runner-up. Boniello knocked off Jordan Chacon of Stevens Tech, 5-1, in the opening match and downed Ursinus’ Mike Schwaher, 12-8, to advance to the championship match. However, he fell to Johns Hopkins’ Paul Stanley in the finals, 7-1.

Senior 133-pounder David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) and senior 149-pounder Peter Lawrence (Greenwich, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) both claimed third place in their respective weight classes, while senior Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) finished fourth in the 184-pound bracket.

Shubick notched an opening-round bye, but fell to Dan Glover of Ursinus, 2-0, in the semifinals. He then defeated Xavier Mohammed of Johns Hopkins, 12-4, and Mark Bistis of Stevens Tech, 4-2, to claim the consolation championship.

Lawrence posted a 9-7 decision over Ursinus’ Chris Springer in his first round match, but was defeated by Matt Shank of Gettysburg in the semifinals, 19-2. He then posted a 7-4 win over James Crumlish of Johns Hopkins and knocked off Springer again, 11-5, in the consolation championship.

Adamson dropped his opener to Matthew Horn of Muhlenberg, 7-0, but recovered to defeat Drew Wolenter of Gettysburg, 16-0. He then fell to Horn again in the consolation championship, 4-3, to finish fourth overall.

Washington and Lee finished its 2007-08 season with a 7-5 overall record.

Wrestling at Newport News Apprentice

Newport News, Va.--The W&L wrestling team notched two victories on Saturday evening. The Generals defeated Newport News Apprentice, 27-9, before topping Longwood, 51-0.

Leading the way for the Generals were seniors Peter Lawrence (Greenwich, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) and Tim Manson (Lookout Mountain, Tenn./Baylor School) and sophomore Sammy Brusca (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep), who went 2-0 on the evening. Lawrence, who wrestles at 149-pounds, defeated Josh Flint of NNA, 11-2, before pinning Longwood’s Sean Evans in 3:12. Manson posted his first win over the Builders’ 157-pounder Austen Damico, 9-7, and then downed Brian Rich of Longwood, 7-0. Brusca defeated Adam Welch of the Apprentice School, 2-0, before claiming a 9-2 win over the Lancers' Shawn Nelson.

Additionally, senior David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) and junior Rob Terrin (Baltimore, Md./Friends) claimed victories via pin. Shubick pinned Jeff Jiron of NNA in 6:39, while Andrew Rivas of Longwood fell to Terrin in 0:14.

The Generals (7-5,2-5) return to the mat on Feb. 23, for the Centennial Conference Championships at Ursinus.

The Washington and Lee wrestling team went 1-2 on the day at the Ursinus Double-Dual on Saturday in Collegeville, Pa. The Generals defeated McDaniel, 22-21, but fell to Muhlenberg, 25-15, and Ursinus, 28-9.

The Washington and Lee wrestling team fell to Johns Hopkins, 25-9, on Saturday evening in Baltimore, Md. The Generals are now 4-3 overall and 1-3 in the Centennial Conference.

The Blue and White were led by seniors David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook), Peter Lawrence (Greenwich, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) and Tim Manson (Lookout Mountain, Tenn./Baylor School), who all notched victories on the night. Shubick, who wrestles at 133 pounds, defeated the Blue Jay’s Xavier Mohammed, 6-5 in overtime, while 149-pounder Lawrence claimed a 9-3 victory over Jim Crumlish. Also, at 157 pounds Manson downed JHU’s Eric Levenseller, 7-6.

The Generals return to the mat on Saturday when they travel to Ursinus for an 11:00 am match.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team posted a 42-3 victory over Southern Virginia on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.

The Generals (4-2) picked up forfeit wins in six weight classes and won two of the three matches that were contested.

At 141 pounds, sophomore Sam Brusca (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) downed SVU (0-2) junior Logan Davis (Puyallup, Wash./Puyallup) by a score of 5-4.

At 149 pounds, W&L senior Erick Gagne (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle College) posted a 9-2 victory over SVU’s Scott Allen, while at 165 pounds, SVU sophomore Peter Rose (Heber City, Utah/Wasatch) knocked off W&L senior Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers), 8-4.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team dropped a pair of Centennial Conference matches on Saturday afternoon as the Generals hosted McDaniel College, Stevens Tech and the US Merchant Marine Academy for a quad meet at Doremus Gym. The Generals dropped a 44-6 decision to Stevens Tech and fell to USMMA, 48-3. W&L and McDaniel did not meet.

Wrestling vs. Stevens Tech

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team dropped a pair of Centennial Conference matches on Saturday afternoon as the Generals hosted McDaniel College, Stevens Tech and the US Merchant Marine Academy for a quad meet at Doremus Gym. The Generals dropped a 44-6 decision to Stevens Tech and fell to USMMA, 48-3. W&L and McDaniel did not meet.

Leading the way for the Generals were seniors Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) and David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook), who both went 1-1 on the day. Adamson posted his win over senior 184-pounder Troy McGuinness (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) of the Merchant Marines, 8-2, while Shubick pinned Stevens Tech junior 133-pounder Mark Bistis (Readington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) in 4:56.

In other action, USMMA defeated McDaniel, 42-6, while Stevens Tech downed McDaniel, 33-12.

Washington and Lee will return to action on Wednesday as it hosts Southern Virginia for a 7:00 pm dual match.

Wrestling hosts W&L Invitational

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team finished fourth out of seven teams at the W&L Tournament held on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center.

Mt. St. Joseph won the team title with 94.5 points, followed by Washington & Jefferson (71.0), Muhlenberg (68.5), Washington and Lee (58.5), Scranton (51.0), Waynesburg (32.5) and Southern Virginia (28.5). Mt. St. Joseph junior 149-pounder Elliott Spence was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler.

Senior Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) led the Generals with a first-place finish in the 165 pound bracket. Boniello received a first-round bye then defeated Southern Virginia’s Julian James, 6-1, in the semifinals, before knocking off MSJ’s Josh Sasfy in the finals, 7-2.

Seniors Peter Lawrence (Greenwich, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee), Tim Manson (Lookout Mountain, Tenn./Baylor School) and Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) and junior John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) all finished third in their respective weight classes.

Lawrence went 3-1 overall and defeated Shaun Yackey of Washington & Jefferson, 7-5, in the third-place match of the 149 pound weight bracket. Manson also went 3-1, pinning (1:58) freshman teammate Keith Jaworski (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) in the 157 pound weight class. Adamson went 3-1 and downed sophomore teammate Jon Brown (Waldorf, Md./Westlake), 3-0, for third at 184 pounds, while Christopher notched a 3-1 mark and defeated Bill Sholly of Muhlenberg in the third-place match, 5-1.

The Generals return to action on Saturday as they host the W&L quad at 12:00 pm.

Wrestling at Messiah Petrofes Invitational

GRANTHAM, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team finished 11th out of 13 teams in the second day of the Messiah Petrofes Invitational on Saturday at the Hitchcock Arena. The Generals had four grapplers finish in the top eight.

 W&L was led by senior John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons), who placed third in the 197-pound weight class, while senior Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) finished sixth at 184 pounds.

Senior Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) and senior Peter Lawrence (Greenwich, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) both had eighth-place finishes. Boniello wrestled at 165 pounds, while Lawrence competed in the 149-pound weight class.

The Generals return to action on Sat., Jan. 5 when they compete in the Washington and Jefferson Quadrangular at 1:00 pm.

Wrestling at Messiah Petrofes Invitational

GRANTHAM, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team competed at the Messiah Petrofes Invitational on Friday at the Hitchcock Arena.

W&L was led by senior John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and senior Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s), who both went 2-0 on the afternoon. Christopher, competing at 197 pounds and Adamson, who wrestles in the 184-pound weight class, will advance to the championship round on Saturday.

Senior Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) went 2-1 on the day in the 165-pound weight class and senior Peter Lawrence (Greenwich, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) finished 3-1 in the 149-pound weight class. Both Boniello and Lawrence will compete in the consolation finals on Saturday.

The Generals return to action for the second day of the Messiah Petrofes Invitational on Saturday at 9:00 am.

 

Wrestling at Ursinus Invitational

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.-- The Washington and Lee wrestling team competed at the Fall Brawl hosted by Ursinus on Sunday morning at the Helfferich Hall Gymnasium. No team scores were kept, but the Generals had two competitors finish in the top three.

Junior John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) placed second in the 197-pound weight class, while senior Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) took third in the 165-pound weight class.

The Generals return to the mat on November 30-December 1 at the Messiah Petrofes Invitational in Grantham, Pa.
