W&L WRESTLING TEAM FINISHES SIXTH AT CENTENNIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS (2/19)

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Western Maryland claimed four individual championships to cruise to its second Centennial Conference wrestling title in three years today at Larry Goldfarb Gymnasium on the campus of Johns Hopkins University. The Terror, which shared the league dual-meet championship with Gettysburg with 5-1 records, had winners in the 125, 157, 184, and 197-pound weight classes, and the silver medalist in the 141-pound division, on its way to 102.5 team points, outpacing the Bullets, who finished second with 68.

Gettysburg claimed individual championships at 133 and 174, and used three second-place finishes to maintain a nine-point edge over Ursinus, which had one individual champion. Muhlenberg claimed two titles and finished fourth, ahead of the host Blue Jays, who crowned their first Centennial champion since 1995. Washington & Lee and Swarthmore finished sixth and seventh, respectively.

Washington and Lee had three wrestlers finish in runner-up positions in their weight classes. Senior Chad Casto (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon Upshur) lost to Vinny Pedalino of Western Maryland in the championship of the 125-pound classification. Junior Josh Chamberlain (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) fell to Andy Faust of Muhlenberg College in the 149-pound championship, while sophomore Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater) lost to Chris McNally of Western Maryland in the 197-pound title bout.

Washington and Lee finishes the season with a record of 7-5, 3-3 Centennial.

W&L FALLS TO MUHLENBERG, NYU

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Washington and Lee wrestling team traveled to Muhlenberg College on Sunday afternoon to compete in a tri-match with the host Mules and New York University. W&L suffered losses in both matches, falling to Muhlenberg by a count 26-21 and to NYU by a score of 27-12.

W&L (7-5, 3-3 Centennial) held a 21-8 lead over the Mules with just four bouts remaining, however, Muhlenberg would garner two victories by decision to go along with two pins in the final four matches for the 26-21 win. Senior Chad Casto (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon Upshur) and freshman Ericson Davis (Clemmons, N.C./North Davidson) each tallied wins by fall in their weight classes. Also victorious in their bouts for the Generals were junior Greg Valentine (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) and sophomore Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater).

NYU garnered victories in the first three bouts of its match with W&L, racing to the 27-12 win. Winning their bouts for the Generals were Morse at 197 pounds, junior John Sensing (Hockessin, Del./Tatnall) at 285 pounds, Casto at 125 pounds, and junior Josh Chamberlain (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) at 149 pounds.

W&L will return to the mats on Saturday, February 20, when it competes in the Centennial Conference Wrestling Tournament at Johns Hopkins University.

W&L WRESTLERS WIN THREE AT JHU

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Washington and Lee wrestling team upped its season record to 7-3 overall, 3-2 Centennial with three wins at the Johns Hopkins Quadrangular. W&L defeated Hopkins (28-17), Albright (38-15), and Lebanon Valley (60-0).

W&L (7-3, 3-2 Centennial) began the day with a Centiennial Conference victory over the host Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins. W&L got wins in contested matches from senior Chad Casto (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon Upshur), junior Josh Chamberlain (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin), and sophomore Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater). In the second match of the day, W&L defeated Albright by a count of 38-15. The Generals got contested wins from Casto, Chamberlain, and freshman Ericson Davis (Clemmons, N.C./North Davidson). The Generals defeated Lebanon Valley College by forfeit, 60-0.

W&L will return to action tomorrow, February 13th, as it travels to Muhlenberg College for a tri-match with the host Mules and New York University.

W&L WRESTLES AT APPRENTICE INVITATIONAL

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Junior Josh Chamberlain (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) and freshman Ericson Davis (Clemmons, N.C./North Davidson) each wrestled their way to third-place finishes at the Newport News Apprentice Invitational on Saturday.

Chamberlain and Davis each posted pins in their opening matches before losing in the second round. Both wrestlers then were able to regroup, battling their ways through the consolation brackets to the third-place finishes.

Other Generals claiming victories in contested matches were senior Chad Casto (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon Upshur), and junior Greg Valentine (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills).

W&L finished seventh in the team scoring with a total of 24 points.

The Generals will return to action on Saturday, February 12, when they will travel to Baltimore, Md., for the Johns Hopkins Quadrangular. The quad-match is set to begin at 12:00 pm.

W&L WRESTLERS OVERCOME SOUTHERN VIRGINIA, 24-21 LEXINGTON, Va. - Senior Chad Casto (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon Upshur) posted Washington and Lee's only pin in leading the Generals' wrestling team to a 24-21 victory over Southern Virginia College on Wednesday evening.

Casto, wrestling in the 125-pound classification, recorded a fall at the 4:56 mark of his match against Jarred Marranto. The win pushes Casto's record to 15-4 on the season. He is currently 7-0 in dual meets. Sophomore 133-pounder Ben Segal (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) followed up Casto's win with a 7-4 victory over Corey Hickman, giving the Generals (4-3) a quick 9-0 lead. Freshman John Polena (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) then won his 141-pound bout by forfeit, increasing the W&L lead to 15-0. After SVC (2-4) rallied to pull within 15-9, junior Greg Valentine (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) recorded a big win at 165, defeating Michael Anderson by a score of 9-5, pushing the W&L lead to 18-9. Junior John Sensing (Hockessin, Del./Tatnall) then clinched the victory for the Generals with a forfeit win at 285 pounds.

W&L will return to action on Saturday, February 5, when it travels to Newport News for the Apprentice School Invitational. The invite is set to begin at 8:00 am.

W&L (3-3, 2-2 Centennial) began the evening with a narrow 21-16 loss to Ursinus College. The Generals quickly rebounded, however, claiming a decisive 42-6 victory over Swarthmore. The match was highlighted by pin by Sensing in the 285-pound classification. Following the win over Swarthmore, W&L suffered a 27-12 loss to the host Green Terror.

W&L FINISHES FIFTH OF EIGHT TEAMS IN W&L INVITATIONAL LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee sophomore Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater) won the 197-pound weight class as the Generals placed fifth of eight teams in the Washington and Lee Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center.

Longwood College won the team championship with 87 points and was followed by Davidson (63), Washington & Jefferson (53.5), Scranton (52), Washington and Lee (49.5), Cumberland College (47), Pensacola Christian (29), and Gallaudet (0).

Ian Kaplan of Davidson was named the tournament's oustanding wrestler after taking the 157-pound weight class, the third time he has won his weight class in the W&L Invitational.

Also putting together a solid performance for W&L was junior Josh Chamberlain (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin), who finished second in the 149-pound weight class. Junior Jeff Paul (Towson, Md./Towson) fell to Morse in the championship of the 197-pound weight class, finishing as the runner-up in that division, while junior John Sensing (Hockessin, Del./Tutnall) placed third in the heavyweight division.

W&L WRESTLERS SHINE AT SWARTHMORE INVITATIONAL
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Senior Chad Casto (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon Upshur) and sophomore Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater) claimed individual championships en route to leading the Washington and Lee wrestling team to a second place finish at the Swarthmore College Invitational over the weekend in Swarthmore, Pa.

W&L had nine wrestlers compete in the event. Casto and Morse each won three consecutive matches to claim their championships. Casto claimed the title in the 125-pound category, while Morse won in the 197-pound classification. Other wrestlers making strong showings in their categories included junior Josh Chamberlain (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) finishing third among the 149-pounders, freshman Ericson Davis (Clemmons, N.C./North Davidson) finishing fourth in the 184-pound category, and junior John Sensing (Hockessin, Del./Tatnall) finishing fourth in the 286-pound classification.

In the team scoring, W&L finished second to York College, who ran away from the field with 111 points, including three champions and three second-place finishers. W&L finished in second with a total of 43 points, just edging third-place Davidson College, who finished with 39 points.

W&L will return to action on January 22, when it hosts the W&L Invitational in Lexington. The matches are set to begin at 10:30 am in the Warner Center.

W&L HOSTS QUADRANGULAR, WINS TWO OF THREE MATCHES Lexington, Va. - Washington and Lee's wrestling team competed in its first dual meets of the year, hosting the W&L Quadrangular meet in Doremus Gymnasium. The Generals won two of their three matches, defeating Gettysburg College 23-18 and Pensacola Christian 23-21, while losing to Davidson College 24-18.

W&L had three wrestlers go 3-0 on the day. Chad Casto, Ivan Zdanov, and John Sensing led the Generals with three wins apiece. Josh Chamberlain and Ezra Morse each won two matches, while John Polena earned one victory. The win over Gettysburg propels the Generals to their first Centennial Conference victory of the season.

W&L WRESTLERS COMPETE AT PETROFES INVITATIONAL
GRANTVILLE, Pa. - Washington and Lee's wrestling team competed in its second meet of the season at the Lebanon Valley/Petrofes Invitational in Grantville, Pa.

W&L had nine wrestlers compete in the event. The highest finish for the Generals was a fifth-place showing by sophomore Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater) in the 197-pound classification. W&L also garnered three sixth-place finishes. The wrestlers finishing sixth were freshman Levi McVey (Tuckerton, N.J./Pinelands) at 174 pounds, junior John Valentine (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) at 184 pounds, and junior John Sensing (Hockessin, Del./Tatnall) at 285 pounds.

Other wrestlers winning matches for W&L were senior Chad Casto (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon Upshur) at 125 pounds, and sophomore Ivan Zdanov (Frederick, Md./Frederick) at 165 pounds.

W&L WRESTLERS COMPETE AT VMI KEYDET INVITATIONAL

McVey, Morse Claim Individual Championships



Lexington, Va. - Washington and Lee's wrestling team opened its season on Saturday by competing in the 1999 VMI Keydet Invitational in Lexington.

Washington and Lee made a solid showing in the tournament, claiming two individual championships and two runner-up positions. Freshman Levi McVey (Tuckerton, N.J./Pinelands) claimed the title at 174-pounds and sophomore Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./ Crater) won the 197-pound championship. W&L senior Chad Casto (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buchannon Upshur) was defeated in the finals of the 125-pound bracket by Levi Spellman of VMI while junior Greg Valentine (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Woodland Hills) lost in the 157-pound championship to Aaron Jaynes of Southern Virginia College.

Other wrestlers winning matches for W&L were freshman Alex Poor (Perkasie, Pa./Germantown Academy), sophomore Ivan Zdanov (Frederick, Md./Frederick), junior John Valentine (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills), and freshman Ericson Davis (Clemmons, N.C./North Davidson).
