W&L Wrestling Splits with Stevens and the Merchant Marine Academy

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team recorded its first nine-win season since 1987 by splitting a pair of Centennial Conference matches on Saturday afternoon at McDaniel College.  The Generals fell to Stevens by a score of 26-13 and defeated the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, 23-15.

The Generals finish the regular season with a 9-5 overall record and a 4-3 mark in conference action.

In the loss to Stevens, W&L fell behind 22-0 before winning three of the final four matches.  Senior Brandon Lefore (Morgan Hill, Calif. / Ann Sobrato) posted a 9-1 major decision over Josh Smith at 174 pounds and sophomore Rexx Hallyburton (Bishop, Ga. / Oconee County) pinned Bruce Parola at 184 pounds to make it a 22-10 contest.  Senior Matt Kaminer (Hewlett, N.Y. / George W. Hewlett) added a 3-1 overtime win at heavyweight against Joseph Moreno.

In the win over the Merchant Marine Academy, the Generals were able to gain an early 16-3 advantage with wins in four of the first five matches.  Junior Ethan Hartman (River Edge, N.J. / River Dell Regional) got things started with a 7-4 win over Jace Garza at 125 pounds.  Junior Zach Bylykbashi (Southington, Conn. / Southington) produced a 7-2 decision over Daniel May at 141 pounds and first-year Bryce Crew (St. Mary's, Ga. / Camden County) notched a pin over Charles Franchina at 149 pounds.  Sophomore Shane Conners (Mount Airy, Md. / South Carroll) added to the opening run of wins with a 13-5 major decision over Kieran Dugan at 157 pounds. 

Hallyburton and Kaminer were the lone Generals to finish with a 2-0 mark on the day.  They secured the match for the team with wins at 184 and 285.  Hallyburton posted a 3-2 win over Kurtis Hahn and Kaminer logged a 16-6 major decision against Victor Raigoza.

Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday when it hosts the Centennial Conference Championship beginning at 10:00 am.
