W&L Wrestling Falls to No. 10 Ferrum in Season-Opener, 27-18

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team dropped a 27-18 season-opening loss to 10th-ranked Ferrum on Saturday at Doremus Gymnasium.

The Generals (0-1) grabbed the early advantage when junior Ethan Hartman (River Edge, N.J. / River Dell Regional) recorded a first-period pin over Ferrum junior Brett Binnix.  The Panthers won the next three matches to assume a 12-6 lead, but sophomore Shane Conners (Mount Airy, Md. / South Carroll) pulled W&L to within 12-9 with a 4-2 decision over Ferrum first-year Braxton May-Nicholson at 157 pounds.

The Panthers (1-0) pushed their lead to 22-9, before W&L recorded wins at two of the top three weight classes.  Senior Brandon Lefore (Morgan Hill, Calif. / Ann Sobrato) notched a 10-7 victory over Ferrum first-year A.J. Banish at 184 pounds and senior 285-pounder Matt Kaminer (Hewlett, N.Y. / George W. Hewlett) produced a first-period win by fall over junior Tyrique Nolen.

Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday when it competes at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational.  Action begins at 9:45 am.
