W&L Wrestling Opens Season at John Carroll Duals

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Washington and Lee wrestling team opened its 2015-16 season on Saturday at the John Carroll Duals.  The Generals defeated Mt. St. Joseph by a score of 36-6, but fell to John Carroll (33-15), St. Catherine (24-14) and Wheeling Jesuit (34-12).

Individually, W&L was led by senior 184-pounder Ron Tassoni (Media, Pa. / Haverford School), who posted a 4-0 record on the day.  He opened with a 15-0 tech fall over Gabe Susinski of John Carroll and then notched a 15-2 major decision over T.J. Edwards of St. Catherine.  His third match resulted in a 5-2 win over Garrett Reinwald of Wheeling Jesuit and Tassoni finished with a 15-0 tech fall over Lashon Howard of Mt. St. Joseph.

First-year Zach Bylykbashi (Burlington, Conn. / Southington) also went 4-0 overall.  He opened with a 17-8 major decision over Iain Whitis of John Carroll and then notched a 6-1 decision over Gage Brandon of St. Catherine.  He then pinned Scott Lopez of Wheeling Jesuit (2:10) and finished strong with a 16-1 tech fall over Charlie Heyob of Mt. St. Joseph.

Sophomore Brandon Lefore (Morgan Hill, Calif. / Ann Sobrato) finished his day with a 3-1 overall record.

Lefore was pinned in his first match, falling to Tom McNulty of John Carroll in 4:25.  He then posted a 9-6 win over Mitch Rusch of St. Catherine and an 11-6 victory over Keegan Driscoll of Wheeling Jesuit.  His day ended with a 6-0 decision over Joe Kammerer of Mt. St. Joseph.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Southern Virginia for a 6:30 pm dual match.
