W&L Wrestling Begins its 2012-13 Season at VT Open
SALEM, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team opened its 2012-13 campaign on Sunday at the Virginia Tech Open held at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Va.
Facing some of its stiffest competition of the season, the Generals' only victories of the day occurred at 149 pounds and 157 pounds.
At 149 pounds, sophomore Conor Duffey (Boxford, Mass. / Brooks School) went 2-2 overall. He opened with a forfeit win over Corey Jacobs of Hofstra, before falling to Mario Mason of Rutgers, 14-5. He recovered to post a 5-4 win over Joey Randazzo of Indiana, but saw his day come to an end with a 5-3 loss to Reggie Adams of King.
At 157 pounds, junior Dan Igel (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. / Bolles School) was 1-2 overall on the day. He fell to Trey Stavrum of Tennessee-Chattanooga in his opening match by a score of 12-4, but then notched a 9-5 win over David Bergida of Virginia Tech. Igel's day then ended when Hofstra's Russell Benner pinned him in 1:44.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational. Action begins at 9:30 am.
