W&L Wrestling Claims Two Place-winners at the Centennial Championships

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team claimed two place-winners and finished eighth out of nine teams at the Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Gettysburg College.

Johns Hopkins won the team championship with 79 points, followed by Ursinus (73.5), Stevens (64.5), Gettysburg (53.5), Merchant Marines (48), McDaniel (27.5), NYU (24.5), Washington and Lee (21.5) and Muhlenberg (15).

Individually for the Generals, seniors David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) and Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) produced the team's top finishes.  Dennis was the runner-up at 157 pounds, while Campbell placed third in the 133-pound bracket.

Dennis opened his day with a pin of Gettysburg's Joe Fiore in 3:57, tying the school record for pins in a season (11) and increasing his own school career record (33).  He then defeated Brent Lowe of McDaniel in the semifinals, 6-4, but was pinned (6:32) by Matt Fusaro of Johns Hopkins in the championship match.  He completed his season with a 23-6 overall record.

Campbell went 3-1 on the day to tie the W&L record for season wins held by James Crytzer since the 1976-77 season.  He opened with a 12-1 major decision over Tom Healy of the Merchant Marines, but then dropped a narrow 3-2 decision to eventual champion Alex Blank of Ursinus.  Campbell then recovered to post an 11-1 major decision over Michael Koren of Johns Hopkins in the consolation semifinals, before notching a 4-2 win over Gettysburg's Matt Spano in the third-place match.  He finished his senior campaign with a 25-8 overall record.

Campbell and Dennis completed their careers ranked second and fourth all-time on the W&L career wins list.  Campbell ended his career with a 73-34 overall mark, while Dennis finished 71-30.

First-year 141-pounder Conor Duffey (Boxford, Mass./Brooks School) and sophomore 149-pounder HT Kotchinian (Lowell, Mass./Belmont Hill) were the only other Generals to post a win in the tournament.  Both fell in the quarterfinal round of the championship bracket.
