The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) recently announced its Capital One Academic All-America men’s at-large teams, and Washington and Lee juniors Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) were both honored.

Mathews and Kurkis Highlight Major Award Winners at W&L
Washington and Lee University held its annual Athletic Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 17 at Lee Chapel. Headlining the award winners were senior field hockey/lacrosse player Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) and senior football player Greg Kurkis (Roswell, Ga./Westminster), who were selected as the “Pres” Brown Outstanding Senior Female and Male Athletes of the Year as voted on by members of the department.

W&L Tabs Nathan Shearer as Head Wrestling Coach
Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced the appointment of Nathan Shearer as head wrestling coach and assistant professor of physical education effective July 1. Shearer will take over for Gary Franke, who stepped down after 38 seasons as the Generals’ head coach.

Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that 173 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed winter term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.

The Washington and Lee wrestling team split a pair of Centennial Conference matches on Saturday morning at the Muhlenberg duals. The Generals knocked off the home-standing Mules, 24-21, for their first conference win of the team, before falling to Ursinus, 43-6.

The Washington and Lee wrestling team finished fifth out of seven teams as it hosted the W&L Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center. Senior 157-pounder Keith Jaworski (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler.

The Washington and Lee wrestling team dropped a trio of matches on Saturday afternoon at the Washington & Jefferson Quad. The Generals were defeated by Muskingum, 25-24, before dropping a 34-6 decision to the host Presidents. The day concluded with a 27-15 Centennial Conference loss to Gettysburg College.
