LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore attacker Collette Murray (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) tallied a career-high five goals to help lead the 10th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to a 19-8 victory over Roanoke in ODAC women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals (13-4, 8-0) then used a six-goal spurt to claim a 9-3 advantage with 13:32 remaining. Junior attacker Cordelia Peters (Larkspur, Calif. / Hotchkiss) started the run off of an assist from Collette Murray at 16:59, and then just 12 seconds later junior attacker Maddy Graves (Cos Cob, Conn. / Greenwich) found the back of the net. Senior attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville) tallied an unassisted score at the 14:57 mark, and a minute later Graves scored a free position goal. Sophomore midfielder Dani Murray (Denver, Colo. / Kent Denver) and Castelo each added an unassisted goal to close out the run.
The Maroons (8-7, 3-5) responded with a man-up goal from senior midfielder Mckenna Polak off of an assist from first-year attacker Jenna Kuczo with 12:40 remaining.
However, that would be as close as Roanoke would get, as the Generals closed out the half with four straight goals to assume a 14-5 lead heading into intermission. Graves tallied a goal and an assist during the spurt.
W&L opened the second half with a three goal run to push the advantage to 17-5 with 20:40 remaining. First-year attacker Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park) scored a goal and dished out an assist in the run. The teams traded goals in the remaining 18:44 as the Generals claimed their 11th-straight victory.
For the game, W&L held a 33-15 advantage in shots and a 20-9 edge in draw controls. The Generals also picked up 15 ground balls, while the Maroons scooped up 13.
Collette Murray tallied one assist to go along with her five goals, while Peters finished with four goals and two assists. Graves added three goals and a pair of assists, while Castelo tallied three goals. Shelley added two goals and an assist, while junior attacker Rebecca Wellford (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) won a career-high 14 draw controls. Sophomore Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y. / Deerfield Academy) played the first half in goal and registered one save. Senior Hannah Wiltshire (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) played the second half and recorded three stops.
First-year attacker Ellie Armstrong led the Maroons with two goals and two assists, while Polak and junior attacker Jenn Schwechheimer each tallied two goals. First-year Carly Schoudel played the full 60 minutes in net for the Maroons and recorded seven saves.
W&L will be the top seed in the ODAC Tournament and will return to action on May 5 when it hosts a semifinal contest. The opponent and time is to be determined.
