W&L Women's Lacrosse Downs Bridgewater, 18-5

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The 10th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team scored 13 first-half goals en route to claiming an 18-5 victory over Bridgewater on Wednesday evening at Jopson Field.

The Generals (10-4, 6-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead just 9:23 into the game. First-year midfielder Alex Meyer (Pelham, N.Y. / Hackley School) got the run started when she scored off an assist from first-year attacker Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park). Senior attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville) and sophomore midfielder Dani Murray (Denver, Colo. / Kent Denver) added back-to-back unassisted tallies 52 seconds apart with 22:03 remaining for a 3-0 lead. Senior attacker Mimi MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Kent Place) then scored off of a feed from Shelley at the 21:37 mark to spot W&L the 4-0 advantage.

Bridgewater (9-4, 3-3) ended W&L's run with a goal from junior midfielder Kristen Stark off of an assist from junior attacker Anna O'Hara, but W&L responded with three unanswered goals to push the lead to six (7-1) with 11:15 left. Castelo tallied the first two goals of the spurt and dished out an assist to Murray on the third goal.

Stark pulled the Eagles within five (7-2) with 10:39 left on a free position goal. However, that would be as close as Bridgewater would get, as the Generals ended the first half on a six-goal run to carry a 13-2 lead into intermission. Junior attacker Cordelia Peters (Larkspur, Calif. / Hotchkiss) tallied three goals and dished out two assists during the run.

W&L continued to put pressure on the Eagles' defense in the second half and maintained at least a 10-goal advantage in posting its eighth straight victory.

The Generals held a 37-16 edge in shots and a 28-14 advantage in ground balls.

Peters led the Blue and White with four goals, three assists and four ground balls, while Castelo added four goals and two assists. Murray finished with three goals and Shelley tallied three assists, to go along with two goals. MacCowatt and first-year midfielder Claire Fulton (Hagerstown, Md. / Saint James School) each added two goals apiece, while Myer finished with one goal.

Senior defender Riley Garcia (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) picked up five ground balls and caused four turnovers, while sophomore defender Caitlin Anderson (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) won seven draw controls and scooped up five ground balls. Sophomore Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y. / Deerfield Academy) played the first half in goal and registered three saves. Senior Hannah Wiltshire (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) played the second half and recorded four stops.

Stark led the Eagles with three goals, while first-year attacker Abby Houtz and junior midfielder Sarah Yashinskie each added one. First-year Mikaela Brooks played the entire contest in goal for BC and made nine saves.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday when it travels to Randolph for a 4:30 pm contest.
