LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville) tallied three goals, including the 100th of her career, as the 11th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team claimed a 23-2 victory over Shenandoah in ODAC action on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals (6-4, 2-0) tallied 11 goals in the opening 15:48 of the game. In that span, Castelo scored two, including her 100th at the 27:35 mark. Junior attacker Cordelia Peters (Larkspur, Calif. / Hotchkiss), sophomore attacker Collette Murray (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) and junior midfielder Brianna Hayes (Commack, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) each added two goals during the spurt.
The Hornets (7-4, 1-1) ended W&L's run with a free position goal from senior attacker Abby Zorilla at the 13:52 mark. However, the Blue and White ended the first half with three straight goals to carry a 14-1 lead into intermission. Peters scored two goals during the spurt, while junior midfielder Emily Carden (Charlottesville, Va. / St. Anne's-Belfield) added a goal.
W&L continued to dominate the offensive end and scored five goals in the first 12:30 of the second half to take a 19-1 advantage. Five different Generals scored during the run.
Sophomore midfielder Cassie Arndt scored an unassisted goal at the 13:22 mark for the Hornets. W&L closed out the game with four goals to reach the final margin, 23-2.
For the game, W&L held a 36-7 advantage in shots and a 20-7 edge in draw controls. The Generals also claimed a slim 15-13 edge in ground balls.
Peters led the Generals with six points on a career-high five goals and one assist. Castelo, Hayes and Collette Murray each tallied three goals. Castelo now has 102 career goals and only needs 11 more to move up to ninth on the W&L all-time goal scoring list.
Senior attacker Mimi MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Kent Place) and first-year midfielder Claire Fulton (Hagerstown, Md. / Saint James School) each tallied two goals and an assist, while Carden added two goals. First-year attacker Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park) finished with a goal and an assist, while sophomore attacker Carson Pinney (Richmond, Va. / Collegiate) and sophomore midfielder Dani Murray (Denver, Colo. / Kent Denver) both scored a goal.
Sophomore Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y. / Deerfield Academy) played 54:21 in goal and made four saves for the Generals. Junior Maddie Albornoz played 47 minutes in goal and made seven stops for the Hornets.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Randolph-Macon for a 1:00 pm contest.
