W&L Women's Lacrosse Cruises to a 17-2 Victory Over Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The 14th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team outscored Virginia Wesleyan, 12-2, in the first half en route to posting a 17-2 victory over the Marlins in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon at Birdsong Field.

The Generals (5-4, 1-0) claimed a quick 3-0 lead in the first two minutes of the contest with two goals coming from sophomore midfielder Dani Murray (Denver, Colo. / Kent Denver). Virginia Wesleyan (6-2, 0-1) got on the board at the 27:55 mark on an unassisted goal from sophomore midfielder Tori Manahan to make the score 3-1.

W&L responded with six straight goals to claim a 9-1 advantage with 12:20 left in the half. Senior attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville) tallied two goals during the run, while first-year attacker Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park) scored a goal and dished out two assists.

The Marlins ended the Generals' spurt with a goal from senior midfielder Megan Schallock, but W&L answered with three goals in the final 10:59 of the half to take a 12-2 edge into intermission.

W&L continued to dominate the offensive end in the second half, scoring five straight goals to reach the final margin, 17-2. Junior attacker Cordelia Peters (Larkspur, Calif. / Hotchkiss) opened the scoring at the 24:34 mark for her second goal of the game. Sophomore attacker Carson Pinney (Richmond, Va. / Collegiate) added a goal and an assist during the spurt.

The Generals held a 45-8 edge in shots and a 23-8 advantage in ground balls. W&L also won 14 draw controls, compared to the Marlins' seven.

Castelo led W&L with four goals, while also picking up three ground balls. Pinney tallied three goals and an assist, while Dani Murray added three goals. Shelley finished with a game-high three assists and one goal. Peters chipped in two goals and sophomore attacker Collette Murray (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) dished out two assists and a goal.

Junior midfielders Brianna Hayes (Commack, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) and Emily Carden (Charlottesville, Va. / St. Anne's-Belfield), and first-year midfielder Claire Fulton (Hagerstown, Md. / Saint James School) each added a goal. Sophomore Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y. / Deerfield Academy) played the entire 60 minutes in goal and made two saves.

Schallock and Manahan each tallied a goal for the Marlins. First-year Jordan Moilanen played the entire contest in goal for VWU and made 15 saves.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Shenandoah at 4:00 pm.
