Peters Leads W&L Women's Lacrosse Past Catholic, 13-9

LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior midfielder Cordelia Peters (Larkspur, Calif. / Hotchkiss) tallied a career-high six points on four goals and two assists to help lead the 11th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to a 13-9 victory over 19th-ranked Catholic on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals (3-4) held a slim 3-2 edge with 18:19 remaining following a free position goal by Catholic (3-4) first-year midfielder Sydney Hartman.

W&L answered with a five-goal run midway through the first half to claim an 8-2 lead with 5:12 remaining. First-year midfielder Claire Fulton (Hagerstown, Md. / Saint James School) got the run started with an unassisted goal at the 15:26 mark and sophomore attacker Collette Murray (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) tallied an unassisted man-up goal at 11:35 (5-2).

Senior attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville) scored off of a feed from junior midfielder Emily Carden (Charlottesville, Va. / St. Anne's-Belfield) at the 8:17 mark to make it 6-2 and less than a minute later, Peters tallied an unassisted goal for a 7-2 lead. Peters then fed sophomore midfielder Dani Murray (Denver, Colo. / Kent Denver) cutting to goal for a score at 5:12 to give W&L the six-goal advantage (8-2).

Catholic ended W&L's run when junior attacker Megan Ellis scored off of a feed from first-year midfielder Kate Behlen with 4:33 remaining. Peters found the back of the net off of an assist from first-year attacker Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park) with 18 seconds left to give the Generals a 9-3 edge heading into intermission.

The Cardinals opened up the second half with four straight goals to pull within two (9-7) with 15:32 remaining. Ellis tallied two goals and an assist during the run, while sophomore attacker Holly Regan dished out two assists.

However, that would be as close as Catholic got, as W&L used a four-goal spurt of their own to push the lead back to six (13-7).  Junior midfielder Brianna Hayes (Commack, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) started the run with an unassisted goal at the 14:48 mark and a little over a minute later, Dani Murray scored on a free position shot. Peters tallied back-to-back goals at 12:13 and 10:53 to cap the run. The Cardinals tallied the final two goals of the game to reach the final margin, 13-9.

For the game, W&L held a 40-20 advantage in shots and a 14-10 edge in draw controls, while the Cardinals claimed a 21-17 edge in ground balls. The Generals also forced 24 Catholic turnovers.

Peters' four goals tied a career-high, while Dani Murray recorded her second career hat trick and added an assist for four points. Castelo and Shelley each tallied a goal and an assist, while Hayes, Collette Murray, Fulton and senior attacker Mimi MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Kent Place) each added a goal. Sophomore Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y. / Deerfield Academy) played the entire 60 minutes and made seven saves.

Ellis led the Cardinals with three goals and an assist. First-year midfielder Anna Maupin added two goals, while Regan dished out two assists. Sophomore Nanci Hernandez also played the entire contest and stopped 14 shots.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts 10th-ranked Tufts at 4:00 pm.
