LEXINGTON, Va. – The 10th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team tallied the final five goals of the game to claim an 11-4 victory over Christopher Newport on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals (2-3) took a 6-1 lead in the opening 13 minutes of the first half, but the Captains (2-3) closed out the period with two goals to pull within three (6-3) heading into halftime.
CNU started the second half with a man-up goal by senior attacker Colleen Bourgal off an assist from senior attacker Carly Wilson to cut the lead to 6-4 with 24:50 left, but it proved to be the Captains' final tally, as the Generals started its game ending five-goal rally just 50 seconds later.
Junior midfielder Emily Carden (Charlottesville, Va. / St. Anne's-Belfield) ignited the spurt with an unassisted goal, and then first-year attacker Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park) tallied a free position goal with 22:42 left to give W&L a four-goal advantage (8-4).
Junior midfielder Cordelia Peters (Larkspur, Calif. / Hotchkiss) and sophomore midfielder Dani Murray (Denver, Colo. / Kent Denver) each found the back of the net on free position shots at 12:17 and 9:19, respectively. Peters closed out the scoring streak with an unassisted goal at the 3:54 mark to reach the final margin (11-4).
Senior goalkeeper Hannah Wiltshire (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) stymied the CNU offense all game, making a season-high 14 saves in 60 minutes of action. W&L also held an 11-5 advantage in draw controls, while the Captains claimed a 14-13 edge in ground balls.
Senior attackers Mimi MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Kent Place) and Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville), and Peters each tallied two goals for the Generals, while first-year attacker Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park) added a goal and an assist. Sophomore attacker Collette Murray (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset), Fulton, first-year midfielder Claire Fulton (Hagerstown, Md. / Saint James School), Dani Murray and Carden each finished with one goal.
Bourgal registered a goal and an assist for the Captains, while senior attacker Tess D'Arcy, and junior midfielders Julia Golden and Jordan Hayes each added one goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlyn Ready made 12 stops in 60 minutes of action.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Sunday when it hosts top-ranked Gettysburg for a 1:00 pm contest.
