ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – St. Mary's (Md.) scored five straight goals to start the second half in posting a 10-9 win over third-ranked Washington and Lee in women's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Seahawk Stadium.
The Generals (0-2) held a 6-5 lead at the halftime break after scoring three straight goals to end the first half. Senior attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville) scored two of the goals and assisted on the other, which was scored by sophomore attacker Carson Pinney (Richmond, Va. / Collegiate).
St. Mary's (1-0) started its second half run just 1:32 into the half, as junior attacker Ali Collie scored off of a feed from senior attacker Gabby Beese. Junior attacker Sydni Thacker gave the Seahawks a 7-6 lead off of an assist from senior attacker Lacey Brown with 26:09 left. Junior midfielder Caitlin Katchmar scored a free position goal at 25:23 and sophomore midfielder Kate Bartholomew tallied back-to-back goals at 22:58 and 20:31 to close out the run.
The Generals used a three-goal surge with 12:06 remaining to pull within one. Sophomore attacker Collette Murray (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) began the comeback with an unassisted man-up goal. From there, Castelo tallied her third goal of the game at the 2:02 mark on a man-down situation, and first-year attacker Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park) scored an unassisted man-down less than a minute later. W&L had a chance to tie the game in the final minute, but could not find the back of the net, as St. Mary's held on for the 10-9 win.
For the game, W&L held a 12-9 edge in draw controls, while St. Mary's claimed a slim 25-24 advantage in shots. The Seahawks also grabbed 17 ground balls compared to the Generals' 15.
Castelo paced W&L with three goals and an assist, while Shelley and senior attacker Mimi MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Kent Place) each tallied two goals. Murray added a goal and an assist, while Pinney totaled a goal. First-year midfielder Kit McNiff (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) won five draw controls for the Generals.
Katchmar led the Seahawks with three goals, while Bartholomew and Collie each tallied two goals. Emma Brown played the full 60 minutes in net and made 12 saves for St. Mary's.
The Generals return to action on Saturday when they travel to seventh-ranked Franklin & Marshall for a 12:00 pm contest.
