VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team had 13 different players score in a 22-6 triumph over Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon at Birdsong Field.
The Generals (6-5, 4-0) went into intermission with a 15-2 lead. First-year midfielder Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's School) scored three goals in the first half, while senior attacker Melissa Coggins (St. John's, Fla. / Bartram Trail) tallied one goal and dished out two assists. First-year attacker Abby Shope and sophomore midfielder Ashley Winslow recorded the Marlins' (2-7, 1-1) two goals.
The Blue and White opened the second half with a four-goal run ignited by senior attacker Carolyn Keenan (Lattingtown, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy Academy) when she scored off of an assist from junior attacker Sara Holland (Houston, Texas / M.B. Lamar) at the 24:40 mark.
Sophomore midfielder Megan Schallock and Ashley Winslow registered unassisted goals at the 18:48 and 16:22 marks to make the score 19-4.
Keenan struck again with 14:43 on the clock when she found the back of the net off of a feed from first-year midfielder Emily Carden (Charlottesville, Va. / St. Anne's-Belfield School). The Marlins responded with goals from Shope and sophomore midfielder Becca Winslow (20-6).
Sophomore attacker Mimi MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Kent Place School) scored with 5:40 remaining in the game, then senior attacker Carly Taglienti (Moorestown, N.J. / Moorestown) found first-year midfielder Brianna Hayes (Commack, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) with 3:27 left in the contest to reach the final margin of 22-6.
W&L held a 20-8 advantage in draw controls and outshot VWC, 40-12. The Generals also held a 12-11 edge in ground balls.
First-year keeper Ellie Aburn (Towson, Md. / Notre Dame Preparatory) saw 30 minutes of action in goal for the Generals and stopped two shots. Sophomores Hannah Wiltshire (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) and Harleigh Bean (Upper Marlboro, Md. / Episcopal) played the remainder of the contest in net and combined for two saves. Senior goalie Madison Carroll suffered the loss for Virginia Wesleyan, seeing all 60 minutes of action and finishing with seven saves.
Tucker and MacCowatt led the Blue and White with three goals each. First-year attacker Rebecca Wellford (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) had a game-high eight draw controls, while junior defender Parker Hamill (Darien, Conn. / Darien) picked up four ground balls and caused three turnovers.
Shope and Ashley Winslow paced the Marlins with two goals apiece.
W&L returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Roanoke for a 4:30 pm contest.
