LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior attacker Melissa Coggins (St. John's, Fla. / Bartram Trail) tallied six points on six assists to lead the Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to a 13-12 win over Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.
W&L (4-5, 2-0) opened the contest with a goal from first-year attacker Maddy Graves (Cos Cob, Conn. / Greenwich) off of a free position shot at the 27:12 mark. Lynchburg (4-3, 0-1) responded with back-to-back goals from senior midfielder Kat Francis (Lebanon, N.J. / Voorhees) to make the score 2-1.
Sophomore attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville School) ignited a 6-0 run for the Blue and White with 21:20 on the clock when she scored off of a feed from Coggins. Junior midfielder Olivia Sisson (Great Falls, Va. / Langley) had two goals in the spurt, while Coggins dished out three assists.
Junior attacker Alexa Carey (New Milford, Conn. / New Milford) capped a Hornets' 3-0 run when she found the back of the net off of an assist from senior attacker Caroline Carozza (Salisbury, Md. / Parkside) to cut the Generals' lead to 7-5 with 5:26 remaining in the first half.
The Generals and Hornets traded the next two goals, but Sisson struck again when she scored off an assist from Coggins with .02 seconds remaining on the clock for W&L to take a 9-6 lead into intermission.
Lynchburg opened the second stanza with a 2-0 spurt (9-8). However, Castelo scored at the 19:56 and 19:37 marks to make the score 11-8.
The Hornets cut the Blue and White's advantage to two when sophomore midfielder Alison Truman (Kennebunk, Maine / Kennebunk) registered an unassisted goal with 18:14 remaining (11-9), but goals from junior midfielder Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md. / Roland Park Country School) and Tucker increased W&L's lead to 13-9.
Lynchburg ended the contest on a 3-0 run to reach the final margin of 13-12.
For the game, the Generals held a 14-13 edge in draw controls and a 15-8 advantage in ground balls.
Sophomore Hannah Wiltshire (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) and first-year Ellie Aburn (Towson, Md. / Notre Dame Preparatory) split time in goal for the Generals and combined for four saves. Senior keeper Treva Tyson (Raleigh, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons) suffered the loss for the Hornets, but played the duration in goal and made 11 saves.
Castelo, Tucker and Sisson all posted three goals for the Blue and White.
Francis and junior attacker Laura Meisner (Greensboro, N.C. / Northwest Guilford) paced the Hornets with three goals apiece.
W&L returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Bridgewater for a 7:00 pm contest.
