ASHLAND, Va. – No. 10 Washington and Lee closed the first period on an 8-2 run en route to posting a 13-8 victory over the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets on Wednesday night on Day Field.
Senior attacker Margaret Klein (North Andover, Mass. / Brooks) sparked the first-half run with an unassisted tally at the 26:15 mark. The Generals scored five unanswered goals before the Yellow Jackets responded with a score at 11:04 by senior midfielder Audrey Hester.
W&L (10-2, 6-0) then notched three more goals, led by senior attacker Greta Witter (Houston, Texas / The Hill School), who tallied one goal and dished out one assist, to take a 9-2 lead with 4:18 left on the clock.
R-MC (6-5, 3-2) got a goal from sophomore attacker Shannon Jamieson in the closing minutes to knot the score at 9-3 at the intermission.
The Yellow Jackets opened the second half with two scores to pull within four goals (9-4) by the 28:36 mark. The Generals responded with four consecutive goals to go up 13-5 with 9:19 left to play.
R-MC got three goals down the stretch, including two from Hester, but the Yellow Jackets could not overcome its six-goal halftime deficit.
For the game, W&L held an advantage in shots (28-16) and ground balls (26-21).
Junior Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J. / Glen Ridge) played all 60 minutes in goal for the Generals, making six saves. First-year Allie Walker suffered the loss in goal for the Yellow Jackets and finished the game with six saves.
Witter paced the Generals' offense with four goals and one assist. Klein recorded three goals and one assist, while junior midfielder Sammy Yates (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) collected two goals. Senior defender Leanne Stone (Darien, Conn. / Darien) led the back third with five caused turnovers and five ground balls.
Hester led the Yellow Jackets with three goals, while Jamieson and sophomore midfielder Jenelle Whitman tallied two goals each.
The Generals will be back in action on April 12 when they host Guilford for a 1:00 pm contest.
