VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – No. 11 Washington and Lee held the Marlins to just two goals in each half as the Generals posted a 14-4 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Foster Field.
After both teams traded goals over the first 12:39, sophomore attacker Melissa Coggins (St. John's, Fla. / Bartram Trail) sparked an 8-1 run that gave the Generals a 9-2 lead at the intermission. Senior attacker Margaret Klein (North Andover, Mass. / Brooks) scored twice during the run, while Coggins added two assists and a goal.
W&L (9-2, 5-0) increased its lead to 12 (14-2) by the 14:19 mark after starting the second period with a 5-0 run, led by three goals from senior attacker Greta Witter (Houston, Texas / The Hill School). Candace Carey scored twice for VWC (4-6, 2-3) in the final 8:34 to reach the final margin.
For the game, the Generals held an advantage in shots (28-13), ground balls (40-34) and draw controls (12-8).
Junior keeper Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J. / Glen Ridge) played all 60 minutes in goal for the Blue and White, making four saves. Madison Carroll suffered the loss for the Marlins, playing the entire game in goal and making seven saves.
Coggins led the Generals' offense with two goals and three assists to total a career-high five points. Witter and first-year attacker Sara Holland (Houston, Texas / M.B. Lamar) each tallied three goals, while first-year midfielder Hayley Soutter (McLean, Va. / Langley) added two goals and one assist. First-year Lindsay DeMuth (Baltimore, Md. / Bryn Mawr) led the defense with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Carey paced the Marlins with two markers, while Carla Williams and Natalie Furey added one goal apiece.
The Generals will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Randolph-Macon for a 7:00 pm contest.
