W&L Women's Lacrosse Edged by Christopher Newport, 9-8
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Christopher Newport junior attacker Ashton Marshall netted the game-winning goal with 46 seconds lefts in the game to give the Captains a 9-8 victory over the Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team on Saturday at Captains Turf Field.
With the game tied at 6-6, senior midfielder Rachel Tomlinson retook the lead for the Captains with a goal off a feed from senior midfielder Lauren King at the 5:07 mark. Sophomore attacker Catherine Klinedinst (McLean, Va./Holton-Arms School) and junior midfielder Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) answered with back-to-back unassisted goals for W&L (0-2), giving the Generals their first lead, 8-7, with 2:19 left in the game. First-year defender Kylie Chaplin evened the scored once again with a free position goal at 1:58 and Marshall solidified the victory for CNU (1-1), scoring with 46 seconds to go.
First-year midfielder Emily Conway (Darien, Conn./Greenwich Academy) opened the second-half scoring with an unassisted goal just 3:51 into the period to pull W&L to within two (6-4). First-year midfielder Amelia Murcott (Madison, N.J./Madison) notched her second goal of the game and the Generals' fifth at 9:33 and W&L continued its run with another goal by Brewster less than a minute later to tie the game at 6-6 with 9:10 to go.
The Captains scored the contest's first three goals to go up 3-0 by the 18:45 mark. Klinedinst opened the scoring for the Generals with an unassisted tally at 18:13 (3-1), only to have CNU's first-year attacker Elena Obregon net a free position shot less than a minute later, pushing the advantage back to three, 4-1, with 17:25 left in the first.
Neither team could get make a goal over the next 7:26 until Murcott recorded the Generals' second goal of the contest at the 9:59 mark (4-2). Three goals were scored in the final 1:03, with the Captains' junior attacker Jessica Singer and Chaplin each registering free position goals, and W&L claiming a score from junior attacker Margaret Klein (North Andover, Mass./Brooks). CNU entered the break with a 6-3 advantage.
As a team, the Generals held an advantage in draw controls (14-5) and shots (33-16), but went just 1-for-5 in free position shots.
In goal for W&L was sophomore Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge), who collected five saves and nine goals-against in the entire 60:00. CNU first-year goalkeeper Hannah Slough spent the entire game in net, stopping 16 shots and claiming eight goals-against.
For the Blue and White, Klinedinst, Murcott and Brewster netted two goals apiece, while first-year midfielder Caroline Hutchinson (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) handed out the Generals' lone assist in the contest. Klinedinst also added four ground balls and one caused turnover, Brewster grabbed eight draw controls and two ground balls, and Conway contributed one goal, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Marshall led the Captains with three goals, and added three ground balls and three caused turnovers. King and Obregon both recorded an assist on the day. Chaplin scored a pair of goals, while senior midfielder Kelly Lane picked up two draw controls, one caused turnover and one ground ball.
The Generals return to the field on Tuesday, when they host Randolph for a 4:00 pm contest to open ODAC action.
