W&L Women's Lacrosse Ranked in Preseason Poll
BALTIMORE, Md. – Lacrosse Magazine announced its 2013 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse National Preseason Poll and the Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team sits at No. 17.
Defending National Champion Trinity (Conn.) was chosen as the preseason No. 1. Salisbury followed in second, while The College of New Jersey, Cortland and Colby rounded out the top five.
The Generals finished the 2012 campaign with a 15-5 overall record after dropping a 16-8 contest to Mary Washington in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. W&L went a perfect 9-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and claimed the program's 13th ODAC Championship.
W&L returns four All-ODAC selections from a season ago in junior defenders Leanne Stone (Darien, Conn./Darien) and Olive Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park), junior midfielder Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and sophomore goalkeeper Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge).
In her 20 starts, Stone led a defensive unit that recorded an 8.45 goals-against average. She collected a team-leading 49 ground balls and 32 caused turnovers en route to earning First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-State and Second Team All-Region honors.
Brewster saw action in all 20 contests with seven starts, notching 38 points on 31 goals and seven assists. A second team all-conference honoree, she also collected 33 ground balls, 22 draw controls and 14 caused turnovers.
Recording a 7.97 goals-against average, Mulligan logged 978:43 minutes in 20 contests with 17 starts. She stopped 100 shots and ended her 2012 campaign with a .435 save percentage, while being named Second Team All-ODAC and Second Team All-State.
Waxter appeared in 14 games with 13 starts for the Generals, tallying 23 ground balls, 11 caused turnovers and seven draw controls. A third team all-conference selection, she joined Stone on the defensive unit that ranked 21st in Division III and allowed just 8.45 goals per game.
The Generals open the 2013 season on February 20, when they travel to St. Mary's for a 3:00 pm contest.
