LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team continued its perfect mark in conference action with an 8-6 victory over Lynchburg on Saturday at Watt Field.
W&L improved to 11-3 overall and 7-0 in the ODAC with the win, while LC dropped to 8-6 on the year and 5-1 in conference play.
The Generals took an early 3-0 lead as senior attacker Alli Shearin (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex), sophomore midfielder Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and first-year midfielder Julia Van Sant (Chevy Chase, Md./Taft School) each scored within the first 11:30 of the contest.
The Hornets answered back with three consecutive goals to bring the score to an even 3-3 with 12:14 left in the half. During the run, junior attacker Kendall Adkin (Jupiter, Fla./New Milford), senior attacker Lesley Buckingham (Herndon, Va./Herndon) and sophomore midfielder Bri Slate (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) all recorded a goal.
With 9:40 left on the clock, sophomore attacker Margaret Klein (North Andover, Mass./Brooks) pulled W&L ahead once again as she scored off an assist by senior attacker Maddie McKaig (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis), giving W&L a 4-3 advantage heading into the break.
In the second half, the Generals were able to pull ahead by as many as four goals as the Blue and White increased its scoring run to five, capped by a free position shot by first-year midfielder Sammy Yates (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) at the 11:30 mark. Lynchburg attempted a comeback with three unanswered goals to close out the game, but that was not enough as W&L earned its seventh-straight ODAC win.
First-year Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) and senior Jennifer Linder (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) split time in net for the Generals. Mulligan recorded six saves and three goals-against in 54:10 and Linder registered one save and allowed three goals in 5:50. First-year Hailey Bossert (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) spent the entire 60:00 in the cage for LC, saving eight shots and allowing eight goals.
Yates and Shearin led the scoring unit for W&L with two goals apiece. McKaig handed out two assists and Klein tallied one goal and one helper. Senior defender Lauren Acker (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Seaholm) notched four ground balls and three caused turnovers, senior midfielder Christina Benedetti grabbed three ground balls and caused two turnovers, and sophomore midfielder Alex Van Horn (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) claimed four draw controls.
For the Hornets, Buckingham paced the offense with two goals and added four draw controls. Adkin tallied one goal and four ground balls, and sophomore defender Brianna LaMarca (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) registered three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
W&L returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Guilford for a 5:00 pm contest.
