W&L Women's Lacrosse Felled by No. 16 Mary Washington, 13-5

LEXINGTON, Va. – The 15th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team ended its three-game winning streak with a loss to No. 16 Mary Washington, 13-5, on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

UMW (6-2) started the contest with a quick 2-0 lead by the 25:51 mark, with goals by senior attacker Lauren Callison (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) and sophomore midfielder Maggie Nunn (Worton, Md./Gunston Day). The Generals (6-3) answered with two consecutive goals to even the score at 2-2 with 19:30 left in the half.

Callison fired off a goal at 13:30 to ignite a three-goal scoring streak for the Eagles, pushing their lead to three at 5:51 (5-2), and prompting the Generals to call a timeout. W&L finished the half strong with a free-position shot by first-year midfielder Julia Van Sant (Chevy Chase, Md./Taft School) and an unassisted goal by sophomore midfielder Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) to pull within one goal heading into the break (5-4).

Less than two minutes into the second period, Brewster netted her second goal of the game to tie the score at 5-5 with 28:52 left in the contest. Senior attacker Allie Kimmelman (Burke, Va./Robinson) pushed the Eagles ahead once again with a goal at 17:38 (6-5), sparking a strong offensive run by UMW, who tallied seven more goals in the game and did not allow another Generals' shot to hit the net, causing W&L to drop their third game to a ranked team this season.

Junior Kathryn Stiltz (Marietta, Ga./Walton) recorded five goals-against, and added six saves and four ground balls as she spent the entire game in net for the Eagles. First-year Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) was in the cage for W&L for 60:00, stopping six shots, while allowing 13 goals-against.

Brewster and Van Sant paced the Generals with two goals apiece. Senior attacker Maddie McKaig (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) added the final goal for W&L. Senior midfielder Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) notched four ground balls and two caused turnovers, and sophomore defender Leanne Stone (Darien, Conn./Darien) and Van Sant each registered three ground balls.

Leading the Eagles with five points, Callison and Kimmelman each posted four goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Catherine Kennedy (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) tallied two goals and a helper. First-year midfielder Mo Sunderland (Baltimore, Md./Towson) claimed four draw controls and sophomore midfielder Hallie Ertel (Virginia Beach, Va./Bishop Sullivan) grabbed three ground balls.

W&L returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Sweet Briar and Randolph to play contests at 3:45 pm and 7:00 pm, respectively.
