W&L Women's Lacrosse Earn IWLCA Preseason Ranking
GRAND LAKE, Colo. - The Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team has been selected 14th in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association's (IWLCA) Top-20 Preseason Poll, as announced by the organization on February 2.
Defending National Champion Gettysburg was chosen for the preseason No. 1 spot. TCNJ sits at No. 2 and SUNY Cortland is ranked No. 3. Rounding out the Top-5, Bowdoin is ranked fourth and Franklin and Marshall takes the No. 5 spot.
W&L finished its 2011 season with a 15-5 overall record, earning a perfect 9-0 mark in conference play and claiming the ODAC Championship with a 21-13 win over Roanoke. The Generals advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament where they ended their season with a 13-12 loss to Salisbury.
The Generals' 2012 season will feature four preseason Top-20 match-ups, including a rematch against Salisbury on March 10 and a trip to No. 1 Gettysburg to close out the regular season.
The Blue and White will be led by four senior captains this season in senior midfielder Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross), defender Lauren Acker (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Seaholm), attackers Maddie McKaig (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and Alli Shearin (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex).
A 2011 First Team All-ODAC and IWLCA Second-Team All-Region selection, Benedetti participated in 13 games with 14 starts, and recorded 39 draw controls, 24 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers.
Aker helped one of the toughest defenses in the ODAC register an 8.56 goals-against average on the 2011 season. She also picked up 15 ground balls, caused five turnovers and had three draw controls.
Last season, McKaig notched 44 points on 29 goals and 15 assists in 20 games (14 starts). The leading returning scorer also registered 10 ground balls and five caused turnovers.
Shearin saw action in 14 games (one start) in 2011, tallying 23 goals, eight assists, four caused turnovers and three ground balls.
The Generals kick off their season when they travel to Christopher Newport on February 19 for a 3:00 pm start time.
