Nine W&L Women's Lacrosse Players Honored by IWLCA
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) recently announced its Division III Academic Honor Roll and W&L had nine individuals honored.
The IWLCA recognized 219 student-athletes from 85 different institutions, and W&L's nine honorees were the most from an individual institution. All student-athletes were nominated by their schools and have achieved a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average and at least junior status academically.
Leading the honorees from W&L was Emmy Mathews '11 (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr), who was named the 2011 IWLCA Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Joining her were classmates Kathy Brown (Baltimore, Md./Cantonsville), Kate Donnelly (Houston, Texas/St. John's), Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal), Wilton Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) and Kate Speare (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) and current seniors Lauren Acker (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Seaholm), Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) and Allie Shearin (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex).
As a team, the Generals also earned 2011 IWLCA Academic Squad accolades, one of 71 Division III institutions recognized.
Washington and Lee concluded the 2011 season with a 15-5 overall record and a 9-0 conference mark while collecting its 12th ODAC title. The squad earned its first NCAA Tournament victory since 2007 with a win over Christopher Newport (15-6) in the first round. W&L then fell to Salisbury, 13-12, in the second round.
