W&L Women's Lacrosse Races Past Sewanee, 21-13
SEWANEE, Ga. – The Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team raced out to a 15-4 halftime lead en route to posting a 21-13 win over Sewanee on Thursday evening.
During the span, Megargel scored three of her six goals during the run, junior attacker Maddie McKaig (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) added a pair of tallys and senior midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) chipped in a goal and an assist.
Megan Wilton put a stop to the W&L run with an unassisted tally at the 11:14 mark, but five more goals by the Generals put W&L up 15-3 before Sewanee added one more goal just before the break to make put the score at 15-4 in favor of Washington and Lee.
The Tigers scored four of the first five goals of the second period, including two more by Welton, to pull to within 16-8 with 20:47 to play. However, W&L tallied three markers over the next five minutes to push back out to a 19-8 lead with just over 15:00 to play and Sewanee never seriously threatened the rest of the way.
Megargel finished with six goals and one assist to lead the Generals. First-year midfielder Alex Van Horn chipped in four goals, first-year attacker Margaret Klein (North Andover, Mass./Brooks) had three goals, while Mathews finished with a goal and two assists.
Senior goalie Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) posted eight saves in goals to earn the win and sophomore Ashley Barnes (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) had seven draw controls.
Welton led the Tigers with six goals and Allison Bland and Victoria Friedman chipped in two apiece.
The Generals return to action on Sunday when they travel to Stevenson for a 1:00 pm contest.
