W&L Women's Lax Claims 9-7 Victory Over Roanoke College

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee senior attacker Meredith Freeman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) led the Generals with three goals as the W&L women’s lacrosse team defeated Roanoke College, 9-7, on Monday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.

After trading a pair of goals to open the game, W&L (6-4, 4-0) used tallies from junior midfielders Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) and Kate Donnelly (Houston, Texas/St. John’s School) and Freeman to assume a 4-1 lead with 11:32 remaining.

Roanoke (3-5, 1-1) responded with two goals from senior midfielder Gina Valles (South Windsor, Conn./Westminster) within a minute of each other to pull the Maroons to within one (4-3) with 9:26 remaining. However, the Generals finished the first period of play with three unanswered goals, including two from sophomore attacker Maddie McKaig (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and one from Freeman to take a 7-3 lead at the half.

W&L added two more goals in the second stanza, never allowing RC to get closer than two goals as it claimed the 9-7 victory, snapping a two-game losing streak to the Maroons.

The Generals were led by Freeman, who tallied three goals. McKaig finished the game with two tallies, while Donnelly, Emmy Mathews, junior attacker Wilton Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne’s-Belfield) and senior attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) each added a goal. Junior Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) played the entirety in net for W&L, stopping 10 shots.

Roanoke was paced by Valles, who recorded four goals. The Maroons also received markers from senior midfielders Cristen Sanfilippo (Sparks, Md./Hereford) and Paige Mason (Orangeville, Ontario/Orangeville). First-year goalkeepers Casey Esloon (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) and Laura Zdziarski (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz) split time in net, combining for three saves.
