JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The 11th-ranked Washington and Lee women's golf team resides in 11th-place out of 23 teams after the first day at the Jekyll Island Invitational held at the Indian Mound Golf Club on Friday.
The Generals shot a +34 score of 322, while fourth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps leads the stellar field with a +14 score of 302. Whitman, ranked 17th, sits in second with a 308 (+20), while 12th-ranked Methodist is third with a 309 (+21). The event features 17 of the top 35 teams in Division III, including six of the Top 10.
Whitman's Phoebe Nguyen leads the individual portion of the event with a one-under par score of 71. W&L's top golfer on Friday was first-year Hannah Jones (Atlanta, Ga. / Blessed Trinity), who fired a 77 (+5) and is in a tie for 14th out of 120 competitors.
Senior Liza Freed (Alexandria, Va. / St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) carded a 79 (+7) that is tied for 27th overall, and first-year Beth Ann Townsend (Greenville, S.C. / Travelers Rest) posted an 80 (+8) that is tied for 36th overall.
First-year Hannah Wright (Thompsons Station, Tenn. / Battle Ground Academy) posted a 106 while playing as an individual. She is 119th overall.
Action continues on Saturday with the second of three rounds from Jekyll Island.
