Albright Edges W&L Women's Basketball, 79-75

LANCASTER, Pa. – Junior guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) scored a game-high 21 points for the Washington and Lee women's basketball team in a 79-75 loss to Albright on Saturday afternoon at the Terry Greene Tip-Off Classic hosted by Franklin & Marshall at the Mayser Center.

Albright (4-0) led just 20-19 after the first period and edged W&L (0-2) 19-15 in the second quarter to take a 39-34 lead into halftime. Senior center Kelecia Harris scored nine points in the frame to lead the Lions' offense.

Albright increased its lead to 56-47 by the end of the third quarter, outscoring Washington and Lee 17-13 in the frame.

Clifford and senior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) made back-to-back layups to cut the lead to 68-61 with 5:03 left in the fourth, but Harris hit a layup with 4:50 on the clock to extend the lead back to nine points (70-61).

Sophomore forward Ailyn Kelly (Clifton, Va. / Centreville) ignited a 7-0 run with a jumper as the Blue and White closed to within two, 70-68, with 2:24 remaining in the contest.

The Lions scored the next five points to grab a 75-68 advantage with 38 seconds on the clock. Clifford registered five markers in the final 30 seconds, but the Generals could not overcome the deficit.

For the game, W&L hit 28-of-70 shots (40.0 percent) and held a 42-37 edge in rebounds. Clifford netted her 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-6 from distance, and senior forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) finished with 14 points. Sophomore guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) totaled 13 points and three steals, while sophomore forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) chipped in nine points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Albright shot 45.9 percent (28-61) from the floor. Harris tallied 19 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore guard Jane Joyce recorded 13 points and five assists. Sophomore forward Alysha Lofton and sophomore guard Nina Mazzarelli netted 11 points apiece, with Lofton pulling in six boards and Mazzarelli dishing out five assists.

W&L returns to action on Sunday when it takes on Franklin & Marshall in the consolation game of the F&M tournament at 1:00 pm.
