SALEM, Va. – Senior forward Shannon Allan hit a layup with 10 seconds remaining to lift third-seeded Lynchburg to a 55-53 win over sixth-seeded Washington and Lee in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament on Friday evening at the Salem Civic Center.
The Generals tied the game at 53-53 with 1:26 remaining in the game when junior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) completed a three-point play. She hit a layup, was fouled by Allan and then completed the play with a made free throw.
Each team had one more possession before the Hornets took over with 42 seconds remaining. First-year guard Olivia DeFrancesco missed a three-pointer with 25 seconds remaining, but junior forward Sarah Coon rebounded the miss and Allan backed her defender down before hitting the winning basket.
W&L had an excellent look to win the game at the buzzer, but the shot would not fall. Following a timeout in the frontcourt, the Generals inbounded the ball in front of their own bench and sophomore guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) drove to the hoop drawing the defense. She kicked the ball to senior Annie Gauf (Vienna, Va. / James Madison), who was wide open, but her triple bounded off the iron as time expired.
The game featured seven ties and 14 lead changes with neither team leading by more than five points in the opening half. Despite shooting 44.0 percent (11-25) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, the Generals trailed the Hornets by a score of 29-26 at the break.
W&L took the lead at 31-29 on a jumper by Clifford with 17:16 remaining, but the Hornets went on a 7-0 run over the next 4:01 to take a five-point (36-31) edge at the 13:15 mark. The LC lead swelled to eight points (43-35) at the 9:40 mark following four straight points from Coon, but W&L chipped away at the LC advantage, eventually knotting the game on Corvino's three-point play.
The Generals finished 21-of-53 (.396) from the floor, but were out-scored 15-7 at the foul line and LC held a 43-35 edge on the boards. Clifford led the way with a game-high 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting. Junior forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) tallied 16 points and eight boards, while Corvino finished with seven points and five rebounds.
Junior forward Chaney Forbush paced the Hornets with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Allan totaled 12 points and Coon grabbed 12 rebounds, to go with four points and three steals.
With the loss, the Generals season is now completed. W&L finished with a 10-game improvement over its 2014 win total, going 16-10 overall. Lynchburg (18-8) advances to the semifinals where it will face seventh-seeded Emory & Henry.
