LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) scored a career-high 17 points and junior forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds to lead the Washington and Lee women's basketball team to a 53-46 victory over Randolph at the Warner Center on Wednesday evening.
The Generals (15-8, 8-7) trailed the WildCats (13-11, 4-11) most of the second half until junior forward Katie Wildes (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy) made a layup with 6:41 left in the game to give W&L a 39-38 lead. RC responded when sophomore guard Jacqueline Hockman (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn) hit a jumper at the 4:16 mark to take the lead back for the WildCats (40-39).
Hendricks then made a jump shot with 4:04 left on the clock, as W&L regained a one-point advantage, 41-40. On Randolph's next two possessions, Corvino stole the ball at the top of the key and converted two fast-break layups to widen the gap to five (45-40) with 3:35 remaining in the contest. The Generals made 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch to reach the final margin.
The WildCats controlled much of the first 20 minutes, with W&L only leading for 2:50 of the opening half. Senior forward Jensen Hoover (Woodstock, Va. / Central) posted eight points in the first stanza to give Randolph a 26-21 lead at intermission.
Corvino's 17 points led the Generals and she added five steals. Wildes chipped in a season-high 13 points and seven rebounds. Along with her 16 boards, Hendricks recorded six points and two steals.
Senior forward Allie Druffel (Centreville, Va. / Westfield) posted a double-double for Randolph with 10 points and 16 rebounds, while Hockman finished with 10 points.
The Generals took care of the basketball, committing a season-low eight turnovers, while forcing the WildCats to turn the ball over 15 times. W&L totaled 18 points off of turnovers compared to just six for Randolph.
W&L returns to the court on Saturday, when it travels to Shenandoah for the last game of the regular season. The contest is set to start at 2:00 pm.
