R-MC Edges W&L Women's Basketball, 73-71

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior guard Sarah Parsons (Glen Allen, Va. / J.R. Tucker) hit a game-winning runner with 3.2 seconds left on the clock to propel the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team to a 73-71 win over Washington and Lee on Tuesday evening at the Warner Center.

The Generals (14-7, 7-6) trailed 52-51 with 9:36 left in the second half, but a triple by junior forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) at the 8:44 mark ignited a 7-0 run to give W&L a 58-52 lead with 7:53 remaining. The Yellow Jackets (18-3, 11-2) responded with an 8-1 spurt over the next three minutes to grab a 60-59 lead with 4:21 left in the game.

The teams went back and forth over the next three minutes until an old-fashioned three-point play by junior forward Katie Anderson (Beaverdam, Va. / Patrick Henry) gave R-MC a 71-69 advantage with 1:11 on the clock. After an empty possession for W&L, junior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon, Ill. / Fenwick) stole the ball from Anderson, and then raced down the court, hitting a layup with 32 seconds remaining to notch the contest at 71-71.

Following a timeout, the Yellow Jackets worked the clock down and then Parsons drove into the lane and hit the game-winning shot with 3.2 seconds left. The Generals called a timeout, but turned the ball over to end the game.

Both teams excelled at the charity stripe, with W&L finishing 21-of-24 (87.5 percent) and R-MC hitting 20-of-22 (90.9 percent). Randolph-Macon took 18 more shots from the field than the Generals, as the Yellow Jackets grabbed 15 offensive rebounds and forced W&L to commit 19 turnovers.

Corvino posted a team-high 12 points and four steals. Hendricks finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, while first-year forward Ailyn Kelly (Clifton, Va. / Centreville) grabbed nine boards.

Parsons tallied a game-high 29 points. Anderson netted 18 points to go along with nine rebounds, and sophomore forward Stephanie Staples (Mechanicsville, Va. / Atlee) logged 10 markers and four steals.

W&L returns to the court on Saturday when it travels to Bridgewater for a 2:00 pm contest.
