LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee used a 19-4 run late in the second half to produce a 65-61 victory over Emory & Henry in ODAC women's basketball on Friday evening at the Warner Center.
The Wasps (6-7, 1-3) tied the game at 39-39 with 9:20 left on a jumper by first-year guard Chloe Harris (Bristol, Va. / John S. Battle). First-year forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) then got the decisive run started with a layup two possessions later, and junior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) and junior forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) scored nine and seven points, respectively during the spurt, as the Generals (10-2, 3-1) pulled away to a 58-43 lead with 2:55 remaining.
Emory & Henry had a run left, however, as the Wasps scored 15 points in a span of 55 seconds to turn a 16-point deficit with 1:30 left into a two-point game (61-59) with 35 seconds remaining. Back-to-back three-pointers by Harris and sophomore guard Megan Jacoby (Richmond, Va. / Amelia Academy) completed the run and the Generals finished things off by making 4-of-6 free throws in the final 28 seconds for the win.
W&L held E&H to just four points in the opening 7:21 of the game, jumping out to an early eight-point (12-4) advantage. The Generals maintained a nine-point lead (21-12) following a pair of free throws by Hendricks with 6:56 left in the first half. However, W&L went cold from the field, going 6:45 without a field goal and the Wasps went on a 9-0 run featuring five points from Harris to tie the game at 21-21 with 1:49 left in the half.
W&L responded to the run by scoring seven points in the final 1:33, sparked by a three-pointer from first-year guard Amanda Ferrero (Ridgefield, Conn. / Ridgefield), to assume a 28-23 lead at the break.
Hendricks led W&L with 15 points, 10 rebounds and five steals, while Corvino tallied 13 points, all coming in the second half. Redding totaled 11 points and seven rebounds, and senior guard Annie Gauf (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) added 10 points and five assists.
